Cooling fan cycles on and off with air conditioning on?
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:16:52 PM »
Hi everyone.
My car is the 1.5 iVtec manual, brand new.

With the car idling and the Air con switched on, both engine and Air con cooling fans switch on, then repeatedly cycle on and off at intervals of about 10 seconds. Is this normal? Why both fans running together even when engine is cold?
Anyone experience the same thing?
Any advice welcome, thank you!

Welcome James! ;D

I guess you are not from the UK having a 1.5 Jazz. All we get is a 1.2 or a 1.4!

Yes both fans run when you use the air con as you say.

Its normal nothing to worry about.

If they didn't then you got problems.

Thanks Jazzy.

Good to hear its normal.  Just worried why they both constantly cycle on and off? On for 10 seconds, then off for 10 Seconds, On then Off etc..... Doesn't seem normal?

Yes its normal.

Just remember that it cycles on/off in future, because as soon as it doesn't then you got problems.

Yeah, I thought this too (the on/off cycle being really short) but didnt think too much of it as its "normal".

Hm...perhaps is normal for Jazzes... my too.
Honda service told me this is happening due to small engine.
Though 1,5 is not "1,3" we have in Europe.
Short cooling fan cycles seems only to happen when the car is not moving.

The GE Jazz does it, definitely. It probably has a small radiator capacity.

When the car is moving air will be flowing through the radiators and cooling them naturally, the fans probably only come on when the car is stationary anyway unless you were either crawling in traffic or climbing a very steep hill on a very hot day.

Running both fans when aircon comes on may be either to stop hot air from aircon getting into engine radiator or to cool the engine to compensate for the extra hot air being blown onto the engine from the aircon fan.

My wifes used to have a Punto (personally I prefer to forget the whole Punto period as it was a disaster of a car) and the fan used to be on most of the time and would run for 5 minutes after the engine had been switched off, even on a cool day - I guess it was just a fixed timer that took no account of the engine temperature at all - Italian engineering at its best!!!!!!!! :'(
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot
