That review isn't very complementary about the engine / gearbox combination although it might be a heavy-footed driver problem that keeps the engine at the high (and noisier) end of the rev range.

This other review about the manual 2WD version http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2016-honda-hr-v-fwd-manual-instrumented-test-review (http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2016-honda-hr-v-fwd-manual-instrumented-test-review) is a bit more favourable.
