How long does it take to change a clutch in a mk 3?
« on: September 04, 2018, 09:28:43 PM »
In February last year l asked if anyone has suffered a juddering whilst moving slowly as my mk3 had this fault when l bought it (ex demo). It has been back to the dealer ( north Lincolnshire)several times since then and in July they agreed to replace the clutch and flywheel. The car was booked in and delivered on the18th of August....and it is still there!  As an ex mechanic who has done many clutch changes on front wheel drive cars over the years l think this would be no more than a day's job..is two and a half weeks acceptable? with no update since last Thursday.

Doesn't sound right to me. I'd assume half a day, a day at the most for a dealer. 'Bob down the road' might take longer as he might not have the official maintenance manual or specialised tools but I'd expect him to do it in a couple of days. Coming up to a month is utterly ridiculous. The car could have been completely stripped down and rebuilt in that time.

Have you contacted them to ask why it's taking so long?

This is apparently how it's done on the Mk2.

They reckon 4 to 5 hours labour.

According to ClickMechanic, 4 to 5 hours, at a cost of £320.57. That includes parts plus delivery and collection.

At work we had a fleet of Mitsubishi shoguns most had clutches go on them, it was five hours per vehicle as best I can remember, (clutch itself was just short of £2500 + vat, ouch!)

I would say they should have the car for a day or two at the most (they are probably short staffed as most places seem to be these days) - they should be able to get the parts they need up-front - 2-1/2 weeks and counting is taking the P155.  If your courtesy car has the same problem it looks like a MK3 clutch recall coming up then ?  Looking on the bright side you are wearing their car out and not yours and they may be waiting for the latest super re-designed clutch from Japan.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

My clutch, april 2017 Mk3, started juddering after 1500miles and went on for many thousand of miles. I talked with the dealer about this problem and the answer was "Yes, we know, many Jazz's clutches judders but we tried to solve it changing the cluthc pack with no results, so now we can only hope to get some  tips from Honda or a new clutck assembly"
Anyway, now I've just reached 18000miles, and judderings pratically have ended.

I understand that there are also clutches on the CVT, assuming we are talking about a manual here and that CVT’s are not affected..thanks.

It is my understanding that the later CVT gearboxes did away with the Starter Clutch and use a Torque Converter, like conventional automatic gearboxes.

Correct. One of the touted benefits of the revised CVT when they brought it back was a torque converter. Can't say I've noticed much difference but apparently some found the clutch unreliable and the TC supposedly gets us off the line faster.

Hi all, thanks everyone for your reponses. The car was booked in around a month before l took it in, l was told a clutch and flywheel would be ordered.this was not done until the gearbox had been removed. My wife was called on the 23rd and told that the flywheel had not arrived. She was then called last Thursday and told that some adjustments were bieng carried out and it should be ready Tuesday (yesterday) since then we have heard nothing. I shall be calling them this afternoon.

They're usually keen to get cars fixed if one of their courtesy cars is tied up.  It's nice to rack up miles in their car rather than yours, although I had an S courtesy car the other day and it did feel quite 'low rent'.

I'm sure all our Jazz's had clutch judder when cold - I seem to recall Honda blaming condensation on the flywheel, which sounds like usual manufacturer nonsense.

Update; spoke to dealer this afternoon, They now tell me car will be at least another 3 weeks as clutch is on back order. Not happy about this at all. In fact p****d of with them and Honda generally.....not what they used to be.

Perhaps it's on back order because they are having to replace an unexpectedly large number of them?
