Hi All,

My Jazz gave up on me today, there was a knocking noise from the front left when accelerating. I took it to Honda and the mechanic calls me into the workshop and says "Its not good."

All the underneath is covered in oil, the gearbox is dry of oil and two oil seals on a driveshaft have blown. He then moves the driveshaft a couple of inches to the left and right saying that the diff has gone so it needs a new gearbox. He reckons a gearbox from a breakers is around £800 if you can find one, then we are looking at 8 hours labour to remove and refit a gearbox, and then how good will that one be?

So at 256,000 miles I have condemned it . . . . and bought another !

I'm getting a 65 reg HS-T in white !

It doesn't owe you anything Ozzie. Those miles, I assume, have been tough on the car being a driving school vehicle.

They were willing to fit a second-hand one but not supply one.

My guess is the oil seals failed first and the resulting loss of oil lead to diff failure.

I have no idea what was the initial problem.

As the car accelerated it would judder a bit, and as I eased off the judder would stop, so I think the drive shaft was moving within the differential, but that only started to be noticeable around 9am yesterday, by 11.30 it was condemned. Its the sudden demise of it that is hard to accept, but even though as others have said, it owed me nothing, and still never left me stranded at the side of the road.

Could you have tried a gearbox specialist? The reason I ask is because my i-Shift actuator gave up and Honda wanted £2k for actuator and clutch. Went to a specialist and he repaired the actuator for £320 including reprogramming.

I suppose I could have thrown money at it. I have always thought after the 150k mark, at the first major component failure it will go. I don't want to spend £2000 this year and have another issue next year and then feel the need to keep spending because I have invested £2000 last year on a car worth around £1500.
Bear in mind that its my workplace so I am not earning whilst the car is off the road, so I'm losing £200 a day at the moment whilst off the road, so I need to be back on the road asap. I can't just go to Hertz and rent a dual controlled automatic car. I would need to go a specialist rental company, who are basically set up to charge huge fees to insurance companies (£500 a week?)
Its a tough call, but its call I have made, and I have to run with it. I had a test drive in the new car yesterday and everything is still very tight, it doesn't accelerate as quick as my former car, which I believe loosened up at around 20k, but it could be that the previous owner didn't even let it stretch its legs a bit. The radio is locked and Honda are struggling to unlock it but they say if need be they will replace the unit, so it will be sorted. However I will be back on the road later today, keeping pupils happy, hopefully for the next 6 years !
However if anyone wants to buy a Jazz Hybrid for parts/repair, I can tell you where theres one for sale :)

Yours is a business car,  so can't really get soft-hearted about it,  IMHO you are doing the right thing by getting a newer model.

Correct choice BIN it then strip for parts if you have space to store & sell over time.

I did think about stripping it but the car is 60 miles from home at a Honda dealer, so I would need to get it recovered back home and of course I would need to get that cost back before making any money on it, meanwhile there's oil dripping out the gearbox etc.
So I have left it at the dealers for them to scrap, possibly not the most profitable way of doing it, but its convenient. They are stuck with it for a week or so as I have taken my private plate off it and I need a new logbook to pass to the dealer before they can offload it.

Understood! Like you I am a Adi, so when my i-Shift was off road for 2 weeks, about four pupils left due to imminent tests. Plus looks like you got your money's worth on this Jazz. Hope your new Jazz will continue to bring you good business, remember to take out the he-man dual control, lol!

Can you get your breakdown company to tow the old Jazz back home and see if you can sell the parts on eBay? I mean, the engine may worth a bit, plus the alloys etc? Does it have leather seats?

Duals swapped over on Thursday, and I am back teaching today. I'm not stripping the car in my garden. I will let someone else do that. Its gone, and I will take this one to 250k+ too. I have 12 years to retirement, so that's 2 cars at 6 years a time.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

well done Ozzie for managing to get so much out of your Jazz good luck with the new one.
I must admit the hybrid I bought has been better than I anticipated averaging 47 mpg mainly round town and 56 on longer journey's  .Also the extra oomph taking roundabouts and on the slip roads was a surprise after the old Jazz.
