Title: New boy alert!
Post by: Lewo on February 15, 2018, 09:14:26 PM
Good evening folks, thanks for letting me in.  :)
As of today we are the owners of a 2008 1.4 Jazz so thought I would join a forum as I have joined VW ones in the past and they have been very helpful so hoping it's the same here  :)

Despite the age the car has only done 28k miles and is great condition.
Any tips on things to look out for etc would be great cheers. Also not had a chance to read through the handbook yet but would like to use decent oil and filter to keep the engine running well.
I've looked on ECP and they have listed 0/30, 5/30 & 5/40 grades so which is the best and which synthetic oil?
I use Millers nanotec in the golf, is that OTT on these cars? The VW mechanic says it's good oil and 'cleans' the engine and it's worth the £50 a pop.

Anyhow, any advice n things would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Lewo.

Hi Lewo

I'm like you, Ive just bought an 09 Jazz and did my firdt oil change today with 5w30 Millers Nanotech, so no it isn't overkill :)

Welcome, Lewo. I use 5W-30 but nothing fancy. Just Comma Xtech. This is a great forum, with plenty chat and loads of advice. Some of it even worth having.  ;D

Sadly low annual mileage can be a bigger problem than normal miles (or even high miles if they are 'motorway miles').

Never paid more than around £30 for engine oil (mostly Castrol magnatec 5W30)  and done loads of miles (around 30K per year) in many cars including 2 Civic and 2 Jazz Honda cars without engine using a drop of oil between changes,  don't be seduced by hype into paying loads of money for oil, the Jazz engine is not a highly stressed performance engine that needs expensive oil,  it is more important to change it regularly.  Any decent branded oil will clean you engine and suck up combustion products and keep them suspended or deliver them to the filter to deal with (if they are big bits).

Try Opie oils,  they have good prices and good service - they do filters for oil, cabin and air as well.

For 2008 GD 8 valve..

for GE 16 valve VTEC - you can get Castrol Edge for about £36 - top oil

I am not convinced (also the safety) about all the nano-technology  stuff everywhere in products.

And here about nano in oil.  http://www.powerperformancenews.com/tech-articles/nanotechnology-does-not-make-miracle-oil/ (http://www.powerperformancenews.com/tech-articles/nanotechnology-does-not-make-miracle-oil/)

Just a 5w30 that meets the car specs and changed regularly, is all it needs!

Oh and... Welcome to Clubjazz, Lewo.

Thanks guys, you know what, I don't even know if it's the 8 or 16 valve...  :) Will look tomorrow.
So 5/30 is recommended over 5/40 then?

Handbook says:
Oil is a major contributor to your
engine’s performance and longevity.
Always use a premium-grade
detergent oil. It is highly
recommended that you use genuine
Honda Motor Oil, ‘‘ACEA A1/B1,’’
‘‘ACEA A3/B3,’’ or ‘‘ACEA A5/B5.’’
in your vehicle for as long as you
own it.

Recommends anything from 0W-20 to 15W-40.
Haynes manual  states API SJ or SL.

Thanks, it's 8 valve engine.
Will have a look at the ACEA spec, but if I go for the millers think I'll get 5/40 as it's the same as use in the golf.

They all have 16 valves. Some have 8 spark plugs and some have 16. The handbook covers both engine configurations.

I use Shell V-Power petrol. Watch out for leaks inside the boot. Just service the car according to the book and you will be fine. Welcome!

A senior moment there. I was thrown by Lewo saying 8 valves instead of 16. I should have said "They all have 16 valves. Some have 4 spark plugs and some have 8. The handbook covers both engine configurations.".

Now there's a thing,  the ones with 8 valves have 8 plugs (GD  i-DSi) and the ones with 16 valves have 4 plugs (GE and later VTEC).

Available exclusively in the European domestic market Jazz and available with only a 5-speed manual transmission.
Displacement: 1,246 cc (76.0 cu in)
Bore x Stroke: 73.0 mm × 74.4 mm (2.87 in × 2.93 in)
Compression Ratio: 10.8:1
Power: 60 kW (82 PS; 80 hp) @ 5,700 rpm
Torque: 110 N⋅m (81 lb⋅ft) @ 2,800 rpm
Variations: L12A1
SOHC 16 valve
8 spark plugs, 2 per cylinder

L13A i-VTEC

SOHC 16 valve i-VTEC

There is a typo there somewhere - there is no space for the second spark plug if 4 valves fitted,  that is why Honda went back to single plug on the later VTEC engines,  if it is i-DSi it has 8 valves.

 http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/2003/1137545/honda_jazz_1_2_i-dsi_s.html

If the 1.2 iDSi had 16 valves it would have more power than the 1.3 i-DSi and that power would be higher up the rev range and not 'run-out-of-breath' at just over 4000rpm.

That is what I thought, but everything I read says 16 valves. That is going to different sites, but perhaps they are all quoting the same erroneous source. I can find nothing definitive from Honda themselves, and the Haynes manual doesn't say. I am not taking the head off to have a look!  ;D

Found this from a different source:

Honda L12A-series
Engine type: spark-ignition 4-stroke
Fuel type: petrol (gasoline)
Fuel system: indirect injection
Charge system: naturally aspirated
Valves per cylinder: 2
Additional features:
PGM-FI; SOHC; i-DSi; 2 spark plugs per cylinder

Emission control: 3-way catalyst, Lambda-Sensor
Emission standard: Euro 3

Cylinders alignment: Line 4
Displacement: 1244 cm3 / 75.8 cui
Bore: 73 mm / 2.87 in
Stroke: 74.3 mm / 2.93 in
Compression ratio: 10.8 : 1
Horsepower net: 57 kW / 78 PS / 76 hp (ECE)/ 5700
Torque net: 110 Nm / 81 ft-lb/ 2800

It would appear than every other source I have found harks back to Wikipedia, and as usual their data is wrong.

Blimey, hope I haven't got 8 plugs lol.
1.4 DSi.
Time to read the handbook properly I think, and have a butchers under the bonnet!  :)

Yep, you sure do have 8 plugs - plenty of info on this forum about changing plugs, especially the rear ones which are a bit trickier than the front ones. Use the search function and 'rear plugs' or spark plug or similar.

When you say 2008 are you referring to a GD (Mk 1) or a GE (Mk 2)? This part of the VIN number will tell you: JHMGD57106S******
Rear plugs on the Mk 1 are easy enough to do. The Mk 2 is a different kettle of fish, I believe.

According to the VIN check it's a GE but did see in the handbook it had 8 plugs and coil packs, lordy!
Have to say the handbook is great for showing how to go about things. Very helpful.

In 2008 it could be i-DSi (GD) or i-VTEC (GE) - the GE was on sale in late 2008 (58 plate).

Has it got i-DSI or i-VTEC on the plastic engine cover ? (the first thing you see on top of engine when you open the bonnet).  i-VTEC only has 4 plugs, on the rear of engine, bit of a PITA to get to but this forum has plenty of info on getting to them.

I believe they continued to use the i-DSi (8 plug) engine in the Jazz Hybrid after 2008,  but pretty sure they did not make a 1.2 Hybrid.

There is useful youtube guide in thread link below to removing the bits to get to the plugs on i-VTEC (only 4 plugs, but fitted at the rear of engine).
