My mpg has dropped since the early nights!
« on: November 02, 2008, 06:35:05 PM »
OK, this may be down to other things.

Since the 'dark nights' arrived the mpg on my new Jazz has dropped from 46ish to just less than 40. The trips are the same - my wife commuting to and from work. The commute itself is just the same. Only thing that has changed is that now the car has its lights on!
Can this really make that kind of difference?

Btw, my mpg is measured by the tankfull and not the instrument panel readout!

If the only change/difference is the lights used on the car and all others [ fuel driver tyres roads route to from are the same ] you have the answer ie the alternator is working overtime driving the lights rear window demister etc.
write to your MP asking why does UK Govt impose lighter mornings darker nights on the voters?

Hi,

MPG will also drop as tempereture falls due to the engine takeing longer to get hot. I noticed last year I lost about 4 mpg during the winter. Same again this year.

Thanks raf, I had hoped I wasn't alone. I think it's having the mpg display that made me question it. My previous car didn't so was never aware of it!

34mpg from the spreadsheet based on filling up a half a tank last week, due to the cold mornings...even had to scrape the ice off one evening after work!

This last week was a bit better at 41mpg.

The trip computer readout for both was about 44mpg.

We dropped to under 40 for the first time last week. I've put that down to the extra cold weather we had!  8)

I seem to be getting poor mpg and also have gone under 40 mpg

But I seem to have had poor mpg from new. I never seem to get anywhere near the brochure quoted figure. I seem to average just over 40 mpg. Thats  the one thing that spoils an otherwise perfect car

The outside temperature is the key - combined with the length of the journey.

From the figures you mention I guess the journey will probably be 5 miles or less. You suffer from the cold weather, but don't get the mileage in to partially reverse the effects.

As a comparison our CVT will run 55+mpg in summer and 52 mpg in winter - we drive gently and on 17mile each way commutes.

Our best mpg was of course in the summer <rules out 2007 and 2008> - just short of 63mpg ( across a full tank !) - and a few people stuck behind us - LOL   ;D

Hmmm!
Had a run around yesterday in daylight - still can't get more than 43mpg?

my jazz is the same. it just wont do what honda claims it can on mpg. it supposed to be good on fuel. 32 33 35mpg is not good for a small engine car.

mine is a 1.4 by the way.

its a real shame because it is a nice car but i think this lets it down
