Engine noise.
« on: February 04, 2018, 02:35:28 PM »
I often read posters commenting on how noisy the engine is, at motorway speeds. Today I was sitting at an indicated 75 mph (70 on GPS) and the predominant background noise was road noise. I could here the engine, but it was neither prominent or intrusive. In fact, when I switched the radio on the only noise evident was road noise. particularly  from other vehicles. Maybe I am just easily satisfied, but the Jazz is no noisier, enginewise, than my Volvo S40 was.

I totally agree.
Only time I know that the engine is running is when I click the down paddle and the revs start to go above 4000rpm and even then it's not obtrusive.

I don't think there is much engine noise, it sounds a bit rattly when cold, but on a long run it is OK.

I don't even find the engine rattles when cold. I start it, in the garage, every morning, and the exhaust note is the loudest bit about it.

Mine's kept outside and on a very cold morning you can here the tappets for a 100 yards or so but they soon warm up. I would consider the actual engine quite quiet compared with some cars I've had. Road noise is a bit louder than some though.

I'm a bit bemused by the engine noise argument as well. At the end of the day it's a small car with a small engine. As such I think it is quite relaxed at 70 mph. I imagine the Mk3 - with the 6th gear - will be even more so at higher speeds and, I gather, once the CVT has reached 70, it settles down to even lower revs.

Yes, road noise is a far greater factor than engine noise. Always has been on estate cars and hatchbacks. One of the reasons I have always bought saloon bodied vehicles up till now.

Definitely. My VW Bora was quieter than my VW Golf. Both had identical 1.9 tdi engines.

Noisier than any hire car I've had recently but not excessively so, although no danger of trying to start an engine that's already running which I used to do often in my 406.

I've done that a couple of times with mine.
