Stupidity.
« on: August 13, 2017, 12:00:45 PM »
Tried to stick car in reverse at 55 mph this morning. Not a great sound. Last thing I need is more stress on my shot gearbox!

I did it on my wifes GD a couple of times, the noise is the baulk rings kissing each other while rotating rapidly in the wrong direction LOL,  really have to concentrate because on my Civic 6th gear is where reverse is on the Jazz.............. dooooohhhhh  Why Honda does not have some kind of gate on reverse like most cars I do not know,  they seem to have brain spasms sometimes in their designs.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Well I certainly had a brain spasm. I was reaching for 6th. Thing is, I have never driven a 6 speed transmission in my life!

We all seem to suffer with senior moments. The most important thing is has the gearbox forgiven you?
OR like a work colleague in the late 50's who had a Westerham 7 or what ever it was called then. It had a Ford engine with a turbo. He gave it welly forgetting the turbo has limits and spread his engine along the Bayswater Road.
Unfortunately our brains have the habit of getting out of kilter and where as normally they cope with all of the trivia we have floating around occasionally the wires get crossed and we try and do silly things.

It certainly seems to. Still changing and not complaining!

Buy an Automatic; don't think it's possible with a CVT. ;)

It is possible in a CVT  to go from 'D' to 'N' on the move, I do this regularly when approaching hold-ups.
It would then be possible to go from 'N' to 'R' and even from 'R' to 'P' unless the gearbox control unit prevents that happening. Either would be disastrous.

I'd love an automatic, but not a CVT. I went into reverse once in my automatic Cavalier, but it was in snow and ice and the wheels just locked up! No damage was caused.

"unless the gearbox control unit prevents that happening" I thought this would have been included in the software; does anyone know?

Not possible on the MKIIIs over about 2 or 3 mph.  Honda have realised how silly we can all be at times  ;)

There is an interlock on all CVT versions linked to the vehicle speed sensor via the PCM (powertrain control module).
I think this also stops you placing it in park unless certain conditions are met.

So what you're saying is old duffers like me should have CVT's so we cannot make an ar*e of things?  :)
