Remember the old 1950's Anglia that had vacuum wipers. Almost stopped under some circumstances.

Then the semaphone indicators on the old A30's
Let's be careful out there !

I replaced the vacuum wipers on my 56 Ford Prefect with an electric set from a Mini.
My Dad had a 47 Ford Anglia and to turn right he would indicate then once cancelled would thump the B pillar so the semaphore would drop back in.

My 1931 Austin 7 had no indicators at all. :o  Arm out for right, arm rotated for left and up and down for braking (it didnt have brake lights either )    Legal  for the age of car  although it confused some mot testers until I fitted modern flashing  indicators and brake lights. Originality is pushing your luck - they dont even  teach hand signals any more.  I doubt many would spot semaphores either.

My 1958 sidevalve Reliant, was mostly reliable. Compared to the motorbikes, I used to ride....  ::)
My party trick, was to change the head gasket, in 90mins at the side of the road. Every few months!

I cured it. By chiselling a crosswise shallow groove, in head and block, between nos 2 and 3 cylinders. It never blew again, in my ownership!  ;D

Ah the good old days when you could rebuild ,or even remove ,an engine at the roadside.  The reliant engine was a close relation to the Austin 7 engine  btw.  Not unknown for enthusiasts to carry a head gasket in the car and replace it in a layby.

Its still quite common to see big Tata and  Ashock Leyland Trucks having their engines rebuilt, including new pistons etc, at the roadside in India.  I've even seen them having their engine rebuilt  whilst broken down in the 'fast' lane of dual carriageways.   :o

I was that soldier!
New gasket taped to the wall, up near the roof. Out of harm's way. And, a gallon of top-up water.....

Reminds me of a friend who sent his mum to collect a new head gasket for him whilst he was at work.

She collected it and folded it in half so it fitted in her bag !!!
