I felt that the omission of the cupholder next to the nearside mirror on the Mk 3 was an improvement as the wife's flask blocked my view of the mirror.

2) Removal of passenger cupholder - Why???

I think the front door hinge has been moved forward relative to the front of the car to increase the cabin size, which means less space for the cupholders, deleted on pax side and made folding on the drivers.

Same here. I just feel that compared to the Mk1 and Mk2 the Mk3 lacks polish.

I think it is the same with all car models. They are all going "upmarket". Mk 3 Jazz is pretty much the equivalent of the Civic that was contemporary with the Mk 1. All manufacturers are doing it. To keep the prices in hand they are having to shave something somewhere, hence the "lacks polish" as andruec says.
I remember reading Arthur Hailey's "Wheels", back in the 70's, and in it he explains how removing a penny worth here and a penny worth there, over the life of a model, can make the difference between profit and loss.

This is what irritates me about motoring journalists and the reason I tend to ignore what they dribble out:

"But while that off-the-line pace is pleasing in urban environments, the lack of torque shows it up on faster roads and motorways. You’ll have to better plan your overtakes than you would in one of the Honda’s turbocharged rivals, often requiring a gear change to speed progress. "

Imagine that. Having to change gear when you want to overtake. Oh the horror of it. How will the owners cope with that?

Note to idiot journalists: If you don't like changing gear drive an automatic!

I am chuffed if I can get away with one downshift!

I would expect to change down one gear as a pre-requisite to overtaking in any vehicle. In a small car like the Jazz dropping down two gears is just what you have to do. With my Mk1 and Mk2 I'd blip the down paddle twice to get the engine to the red line then floor the accelerator and reactivate auto mode as I passed the vehicle(s). Unfortunately that doesn't work so well with the Mk3 because they got rid of the auto/manual button on the steering wheel.

But, to be honest, there's little point in overtaking on single carriageways anyway and I've never felt the need to be gung-ho on a motorway. My view is that if you need that much launch on a motorway you're probably doing something you shouldn't or failed to check your mirrors beforehand.

All I seem to pass are cyclists and the odd tractor. If it is one of the new tractors you have no chance.

Speed limit on tractors is 25mph.  They are all driven way faster than that.  I wonder how good the Anti-Lock brakes are  ::)

The same as the speed limit for trucks in Scotland is 40 mph, on single carriageways!

It's 50mph in England and has been for a while now. It made a hell of a difference when the limit was raised.
It also means that a lot of the trucks travel at their max, governed, speed of 56mph on single carriageway roads because of the 10% plus 2mph rule that most authorities allow on the speed limit.
Also, as is obvious, there simply aren't the number of traffic police about as there used to be.

Vic.
