I’ve had my cvt for a couple of months now and the only thing that I don’t like is the lack of engine braking even if I use the paddle to gear down it still seems to run away faster than I’d like, I live at the bottom of a hill with a narrow road that I now have to brake all the way down  where my previous car would trundle down happily in 1st. I got to thinking and wondered whether this was designed to protect the gearbox would excessive braking damage it ? If so I’ll have to learn to use my brakes more. I used to pride myself for anticipating traffic an not having to brake too often.

Automatics have very poor engine braking. I drove automatics for 25 years, before getting my manual Jazz, and it is just something you get used to.

I'm fortunate where I live in that it's pretty flat but the engine braking is not great. I've found S mode helps a bit if I'm going down a longish hill but it can't really compete with a manual.

Yes lots of hills around here I can see my brake pad bill going up :-X

I test drove a hybrid Yaris before getting another Jazz. That had regen braking, like an electric car, and, as a consequence, a much greater engine braking effect although it wasn't really engine braking as such.

I liked the Yaris but it was too small in the back for what we needed.

Thought this might be a problem as I live in an area with lots of steep hills .. had the Jazz less than a week but selecting S appears to do the job, holds car nicely @ 40mph down hills!

Disc pads are far cheaper to replace than a gbox, enjoy the drive.

Very hilly here, edge of Staffordshire Moorlands. I have always preferred braking using the brakes  and expect 30k miles per set of pads..  which tends to keep rust off the disks...

I used to drive in the Highlands with a prewar Rover 16 design  and a freewheel..  brake fade and the smell of red hot drum brakes is an everlasting (and scary) memory..

+1  My HR-V has no issues if I use the paddles
