Estimate for smashed glass window?
« on: March 12, 2019, 08:11:16 PM »
Sad news to share: someone smashed my front driver-side small glass window in front of the driver door.  >:(
Nothing stolen, and car dash cams remained. Going to review if it picked up any activity, but I’m doubtful as it’s from the side. Sigh.
Anyway, does anyone have any idea how much that small land of glass would cost to replace by Honda official centre, or from a local garage? Just looking for rough ballpark figures so I can understand if I’m charged excessively. Thanks in advance.

Buy it yourself and get it fitted at a coachbuilder's.

Agree with Jocko, get a used one and get someone to fit it. Windscreen fitters with a bit of spare time and shortage of beer money are the ideal chaps to know, the glass is bonded and they have the equipment.

It's even possible to DIY, but you do need a few specialist tools, primer, and the adhesive for bonded glass, and it helps if someone who knows what they are doing shows you how.

Either way, almost certainly not worth an insurance claim for small glass. Of course you could just have it replaced on insurance for your glass excess, but you then have to declare it on renewals as a claim, generally for five years.

The replacement glass from a dealer is just over £200 and then depending on any damage to the surrounding trims and fitting there would be additional costs.

When you can buy one on eBay for £30 why the hassle of a scrapyard? Doubt you would get one much cheaper, with the  issues of having to find one and possibly removing it yourself.

Thank you everyone for your inputs and suggestions.
Honda Ruislip indeed did quote me £210.16 inc VAT for just the glass.
They said that I also need to order the rubber dampers that the glass fits onto, which is an extra £80.10 inv VAT.
Finally, fitting is to be charged for, and that costs £100 ex VAT.
Not a cheap proposition...   So impressed that ebay sells these things so readily!

Here's the scary part:  Honda Ruislip said that 2wks ago, a lady came in with the same issue - front quarter driver side glass got smashed in, and it was also done in the same spot, Ruislip Station car park!!!  Some vindictive idiot is intentionally doing this against Honda Jazz cars!!!  ARGH!!!!

I thought glass is covered by insurance? Have you tried a local glass specialist like Autoglass?

Of course you could, but as I said above...

...you could just have it replaced on insurance for your glass excess, but you then have to declare it on renewals as a claim, generally for five years.

You have to weigh up if it's worth it.

MichaelC, did you also deadlock the car? If you press the lock button X2, it can't be opened from the inside. May be worth doing in case they try to get into the car.
