A Mondeo GLX; before Colin McRae's grandmother put it beyond economical repair by ramming it and forced us to get a new car. 3 more days and we collect our brand new Jazz!

Before my current Civic (to be replaced by a new model Jazz early next year) I had a 52-reg MINI Cooper, MINI No2 to be exact, as No1 (2001/51 Cooper) was wrote-off at six months old by a inattentive Dutch lorry driver doing a bad lane change on the M1. I had huge trouble at first..Insurance company would'nt agree the car was a write-off (look again, dumb-ass) and the trucker denied responsibility. Eventually, the ins & trucker woke up and smelt the coffee but I had to wait months to get another MINI to do production delays.

Still driving mine as the new Jazz will not be ready until the end of the month.

However, it is a Mercedes A Class - a 1999 A160 Avantgarde that I have had for the last 6 years.

My wife has driven a Jazz now for 3 years, her last car before that was a Fiat Punto automatic, it was ok to drive, roomy and comfortable, but it was nothing but trouble - -

Auto box would not drive sometimes (very embarassing in traffic queues and at islands) took it back to Fiat dealer who kept it for 2 weeks and said they had to change very expensive ECU unit (under warranty), but the problem was still there, took it to Fiat main dealer who changed a switch worth £12.00 (including fitting) to the brake pedal and it never happened again.

Rear subframe bushes went and they had to fit a kit that Fiat made to 'beef them up' because they were too weak to start with and caused horrendous banging noises from the back of the car at slightest bump in the road.

Ignition coil went, apparently this is quite common because dealers kept a good stock of them.

Heater radiator burst and filled the car with anti-freeze, cost £400 to fix because the garage had to take all the dashboard out to get to it.

This was the final straw, I was fed up with spending money on the damned thing and took her to the local Honda dealer to get a Jazz, it has been faultless during the 3 years she's had it and she loves it, I was already a Honda driver and couldn't understand how one car could give so much trouble - she's happy now and I'm glad she's driving a reliable car.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

Previous Car to the Jazz just bought,  was a Rover 75....and before that was a New Civic ....don't laugh at this ....put my Daughter Kirsty on the Insurance to start at 6pm ....she rolled it and wrote it off at 7:30 pm ...she came out of it fine , Civic was totalled.
Totally out of Character she is really quite a good Driver .
I sent her out to buy a Lottery Ticket ...it was a roll over week !

The Jazz I have recently acquired is my first "sensible" car for some time - replacing a 3 litre mad Renault Avantime, prior to that I drove a coupe of Mercedes coupes and a fast Alfa Romeo -but I love the Jazz and now know why I see so many of them- the magic seats are -'magic" but the whole car feels so well built and mine is several years old.

Company cars allow you to forget all about running costs:

Audi A4 get feel went crusing on A roads,
Volvo estates went everywhere but passed a petrol pump
Subaru Legacy Estate Turbo x 2 fantastic cars clutch lasted 48k on both
Subaru Outback great but thirsty 27mpg no matter how you drove it

Our real cars with our own £'s
1990 Mercedes 190 e uto then 1991 190e auto then 190e auto LE
2002 Jazz Sport with all extras -  great car one of the very 1st in NW.

Currently driving
2004 Jazz CVT Mk2 much improved

2006 Jazz SE + Sr CVT 1st rate did 21k in year one, then calmed down.

190E was a great car.....more user-friendly then contemporary BMW E30 generation of BMW 3-series, less vulgar then E36 3-Series.

History (most recent first):

  • 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited

The Starksy & Hutch style model or the smaller Tonka-toy styled version?

I do have one serious issue with these, at least the later 2001-07 model - the fuel tank is right behind the rear bumper. I was behind one the other day and it was clearly visible - methinks an MX-5 or MGF could come into contact with the tank if one bifferd a Cherokee up the backside.

'm suprised car makers still put the fuel tank in that location. Didnt the Americans learn anything from the Ford Pinto?  :o

- 2006/56 Jazz 1.4 SE CVT storm silver (current)

- 2002/02 Jazz 1.4 SE CVT mint green
Bought at six months old. Originally wanted a 'bread van' Civic three-door but I was somewhat disapointed with the interior and steering. I was 25 when I bought my first Jazz as fuel economy and reilability were important. A fantastic car which proved even more useful once I became a dad!

- 1996/N Rover 214i
I needed something cheap after the Saxo. Head gasket was on the way out (well known K-series engine issue) so I got it very, very cheap for a (then) 5.5 year old car with 35k miles. I had the HG fixed but the car was still a pile of rubbish.

- 1997/R Citroen Saxo VTS 16v
Six points for speeding, then ins claim for accident (went into the back of someone) and theft of radio, fuel costs...had to go in the end.

- 1993/K Citroen AX GT
- 1989/G Citreon AX 1.1
- 1982/X Mini

Wife has a MINI.

Pardon?  ;D No E number talk please, Matt!

I presume the E36 3-series was the 1991-98 model....the one which ruined the BMW image...all those 316i's with plastic wheelcovers being driven aggressively by Mr Burton's Two-Piece in the outside lane!

The kind who have Audi A4's today.  ;)
