iShift auto transmission oil chain due
« on: June 20, 2018, 10:53:54 AM »
My iShift has done 26k miles and needs transmission oil change 2yrs or 25k miles. The problem is Ive taken the car to three independent mechanic's and non of them wont touch it with barge pole because so-called sensor in the gearbox. I know for a fact this absolute rubbish Ive had it done before it's a straight forward job, oh Ive been given quotes of £170 by a gearbox specialist and other very silly prices, in the end Wimbeldon Honda said they will do it for £48 beacuse Ive got my own MTF oil. My question is what's the big deal about the iShift gearbox in terms of a tramnsmission change?

As far as I am aware, the i-shift gearbox is exactly the same as my manual box, except for automatic electrical actuation, and an oil change is no more difficult than a standard gearbox oil change.

Easy job to do but my Dealer in Plymouth said the oil needed changing 10 yrs???? ten thousand miles??? and to use MTF Fluid only NOT ATF you could do it yourself as to any sensor  never heard of it the awkward thing id the main drain plug  you will need a long wrench to shift it, take out the top filler plug first easy to do

According to the Haynes manual the Manual Transmission needs an oil change every 48,000 miles or 4 years, the handbook I got with the car says 75,000 miles or 6 years (Except EU), and the service book that came with the car (the one with the dealer stamps in it) says 75,000 miles or 8 years. It says the same for AT, so as I assume that is the i-shift, as it also gives numbers for the CVT.

I always take out the top 'fill' plug (17mm hex head) first because it can be very difficult to get undone, and if you take out  the 'drain' plug ( 1/2" internal square - use the end of a socket extension ) because if you drain the oil but cannot refill it you are up the creek without a paddle. Plugs are easier to get to on a Jazz than on my Civic ( which has much more underguarding), I had to take LH front wheel off, pull as much underguarding as I could out of the way and use every extension I had, plus a knuckle joint and a 600mm breaker bar to get Civic ones out.

IIRC I could get to  Jazz  Plugs by jacking up and axle stand without taking wheel off and use just the 1/2" square socket wrench without extensions on the Jazz drain plug, and wrench plus 17mm socket for the fill plug.

No the iShift is every 2years or 25k miles I was quoted this by an senor Honda Tec also if its not changed accoding the schedule my gearbox starts making a loud clunking noise. Thanks for your input though mate.

According to my handbook, it's every 8 yrs or 75,000 miles. Had it done last year by Honda Dealer as I had a airbag recall and was done with the Service. But my local independent garage would have done it for £50.

The service book has to be correct, and could be used in court if you were taking action over a civil claim for warranty. If you took civil action and had followed the service manual you would have a pretty strong case. The Senior Honda Tech may be basing his advice on Honda's most recent findings. Perhaps they have found that early gearbox input shaft bearings don't fail if the oil is changed at the shorter interval. As Steve says, if he doesn't change it at these intervals, it starts clunking!

Thanks Jocko! So do you think because my i-Shift may have failed because I changed the oil according to Honda's schedule, in other words, too late? Many years ago, my sister's Hyundai Coupe Auto box failed at 50k miles as the oil was scheduled to change at 60k. Latter models were changed to 40k!

Personally, if we are asked to change the engine oil every year/12.5 k miles, I don't know why they leave the gearbox oil for so long-afterall, it works as hard as the engine.

Exactly as the service book/handbook says.

Rationally, the iShift fluid change interval is the same as the manual gearbox which is 75k miles / 8 years. However, looking at the Honda standard service sheet used by my dealer it shows AT as 75k miles / 8 years, thereafter 50k miles / 4 years (but no reduced interval for the MT). That service sheet also lists CVT separately with Jazz 2012 MY as 25k miles / 2 years. This is a change from what is in the handbooks provided with the vehicles as Honda reduced the intervals after discovering long term problems with the MK 1 CVT box caused by accumulating crud.
