Buying a Honda Jazz
« on: February 03, 2020, 05:04:36 PM »
Hi
I am thinking of buying a 2009 Honda Jazz.  I am probably going to have a look at a 1.4EX.
Is there anything I should look out for?

Welcome. Apart from all the usual things listen for any gearbox noises (if a manual). With the engine running listen for any noise when you lift the clutch. Earlier gearboxes had a bearing issue, but by 2009 it was pretty rare but still worth listening out for.

My 2009 EX ishift had done 50,000 miles when I bought it in 2017 and it has now done 78,000 trouble-free miles...
Apart from a new battery, four new boots and a set of wiper blades, it has cost me nothing but an annual service/MoT and has averaged 51-mpg. I use the paddles as well as gentle braking when slowing down. down for roundabouts etc. I love the car as it's easy to drive, comfortable, reliable (so far!) and frugal. What's not to like?

Thanks for the replies so far!
I’m looking for a 5 door car for £2000-£3000, maximum of 11 years old, to replace my 16 year old Fiat Panda that I had from new.
I’ve narrowed it down to
Renault Clio or Honda Jazz.
I think the reliability of the Honda will swing it that way.
Any thoughts?
(I also have a Boxster as my fun car, I’m wanting something for around town and longer motorway trips)

I have a 56 plate 1.2S and the number beside my avatar is the calculated average mpg for the three and a half years I have owned the car. In that time (35,000 miles) it has been exceedingly reliable.

Having owned both, the Honda is a far better made vehicle, and more practical.

The basics of the Clio are fine, but ours had a raft of mechanical and electrical problems, and the interior trim was made of toffee. There was always something wrong with it. The one thing the Clio did have was more comfortable suspension, but on the other hand, the interior space of the mk1 and mk2 Jazz is far superior.

We've had several French cars, but I would only buy another Renault if it was very cheap and I was desperate - I mean cheap enough to be able to scrap it and walk away if necessary.

Look out for leaking water in the boot. Also make sure the car has its airbags recall completed.

Mine didn't, but I just contacted Honda and they arranged it. Gave me a free courtesy car as well.

Mine has 124,500 miles on the clock and there is no wear around pedals, carpet or steering wheel.

You'll have to stop driving in slippers Jocko.  ;D

I replaced the steering wheel in ours, it was really tatty. In fact, it was the only thing that showed the miles in the car, the seats still look like new. The pedal rubbers are getting ready now, but I got a pair of exact replacements from a seller in China for a couple of quid.

Is that in your 1.2dsi?
I heard you mention keeping in 5th before but I assumed it was in a 1.4 till I noticed your sig is a 1.2!
Is it auto or manual?

I have a manual 1.2 i-DSi. The torque is great from such a small engine. I seldom if ever exceed 3,000 rpm. I am very light on the throttle as my average mpg beside my avatar testifies. I keep up with traffic and I am certainly not a slouch on the road.

Here are the torque and power curves for the 1.2 i-DSi engine.

I sometimes, where road conditions permit (accelerating to join traffic on a slight downslope), change from 2nd into 5th. I also make great use of Deceleration Fuel Cut Off.
