Anybody help on faulty tyre deflation warning light
« on: May 13, 2017, 02:40:45 PM »
Hi everyone, newbie to site here and wondering if anyone can help with tyre deflation light problem. Will try and keep brief
Had my 65 reg car from new no problems, had a puncture, so brand new tyre fitted exactly same Michelin as rest of car.car only done 6000 miles. Since new tyre on warning keeps coming on. I kept calibrating over a few weeks and keeps coming back on. Took it to honda. They slightly adjusted pressures recalibrated give it me back. Within a week light back on again. Sent Bach to honda again they have rebalanced every tyre, and adjusted tracking . Gave me the car back and the very next day have taken out on the motorway and yes you guessed it light is back on. Rang honda this morning they said they have everything they can, so they got to raise it to technical team at Honda UK..surely to God they must know how to solve a problem like this. Anyone with any ideas or having same problems. Thanks

Because the system works by detecting rotation speed difference on each wheel, there must be an independent rotating speed sensor on each wheel. Surely the sensor on one wheel must be faulty?

I am 99% sure it uses the ABS sensor signals,  so you would expect to get an ABS warning if a sensor was faulty.  May be software playing up on the tyre deflation bit.

After initialising the tyre deflation it is important to drive at above 15mph (25km/h) for at least 10 minutes,  but I am sure both you and Honda would have done that.

Although I am not sure, I believe the tyre deflation system uses the ABS sensors on each wheel hub. If one was faulty I would expect an ABS fault light. The only thing that has changed is the tyre, even if it has a slightly different rolling radius the system would compensate during calibration. Have you followed the calibration sequence to the letter, including unexpected ones like having the handbrake on during the initialisation? Sorry I can't be more helpful but something is stopping the 30 minute calibration from succeeding.

If all else fails to resolve the problem I would disconnect the battery negative terminal for a few minutes for a complete system reset.

Good points about using ABS system which would make sense.
Guessing a bit, but the pressure warning system is presumably looking for tiny differences in speed on each wheel while the ABS is looking for gross differences (wheel locking up).
Maybe a slightly faulty sensor would be enough to trigger the tyre pressure warning but not enough to flag an ABS warning?

many thanks for the replies however all the recalibratating I have done, and indeed the so called honda specialists checking the car over including rebalancing all the tyres tracking checked and pressures all by Honda and I still have the light on . I know it must be a faulty sensor, but why have Honda said they cant do anymore and referring to Honda uk tech service.these damn warning sensor lights are a pain, and I know I am going to get the same problem in future if I ever just replace 1 tyre, and no doubt the car will be out of warranty and I will have to pay all the bills.

You could try shifting the new tyre to the other side of the car, yet another recalibration and see what happens.

Thanks for that deeps I will use this as a last resort and see what happens if the so called experts don't come up with a proper fix .I just hope I never get another puncture . Think the light might be on forever then !!

I have respect for the system after my recent experience......

I have had only positive experience with deflation warning on three Jazz and a Civic,  one was a bit of a false alarm (a false positive though) when i had a couple of new tyres, but after initialising it was OK.  The other couple were slow punctures and once on the Civic with a bit of corrosion on a rear alloy where the OEM balance weight with steel clip had been knocked in under the tyre bead and steel had had an argument with aluminium Dooooohhhh (causing about a 1 PSI a day air loss)  - you would think OEM would have more sense,  most tyre places like ATS use adhesive weights when they fit tyres.

These episodes have convinced me that the deflation warning does work and is pretty sensitive,  I have never had it trigger for no reason.

My two false TPMS alarms have been self inflicted due to incorrect initialisation. Each was 30 minutes driving time after the duff initialisation. This is an indication of a failed initialisation as it is a 30 minute process. I have initialised the system correctly a few times since after tyre pressure checks and had no problems.

Both of my alert experiences were valid. One was an under inflation the other was me forgetting to reset it after replacing worn tyres.

Has your tyre monitoring problem been resolved Jazz999? If so what was the problem?
