Gearbox Oil Interval
« on: July 03, 2023, 08:19:18 PM »
Hi all. I own a 2007 1.4 i-DSi Manual. It's my first car and I love it to bits. I bought it in November a week after passing my test, on 56750 miles with pretty much full service history, primarily stamps from Fish Brothers Honda in Swindon, but the last 3 were from elsewhere. And now under my ownership it'll be serviced by myself.

The only thing about the service record that concerns me is that the gearbox oil was changed in 2013 at 6 years and around 32k miles, way before the 8 year/72k mile interval, but it hasn't been done since, or at least, hasn't been recorded. It's still within the mileage interval but is 2 years overdue. I've already bought the stuff I need to do it and will be doing it within the next couple of weeks, but I'm just wondering what could've happened to my gearbox with this 10 year old oil. Fourth and Fifth gear whine under power as I get up to 40-50+ mph, but it has no issues with going in or out of gear, never pops out, etc. It's actually a very nice snappy gearbox to use and engages in a satisfying notchy manner.

Just wondering what the reduced quality of oil could've done really, and is the whine of any concern? It's been doing about 3k miles per year in a city by presumably a little old lady, by the name on the old new keeper slip and other aspects of the car's documentation.

Thanks :)

Welcome. it sounds like your input shaft bearing is defective, a common fault on the Mk 1 Jazz. It has nothing to do with the oil or oil changes there was a defect in the bearings fitted by Honda. Gearbox oil doesn't deteriorate the same as engine oil so I wouldn't worry about that. Just change it as you planned.
The gearbox will get noisier but won't fail. My 2006 got so noisy I got embarrassed (101,000 miles). I got various quotes to get it replaced. All around £1,000 - £1,200. Eventually, I contacted a transmission specialist who quoted £324 so he got the job. He did it without removing the gearbox. He replaced all the bearings and seals and refilled with fresh oil. Repair came with a 12-month, unlimited mileage guarantee. It was perfect for the next 48,000 miles and 5 years driving until rust got the better of my lovely Jazz.

That's a relief, I always have a little voice in the back of my head telling me that one day when I put my foot down in 4th it's just going to crunch itself into oblivion. As long as it doesn't fail, I'm happy. Gearbox oil will go in when I get a chance, It all arrived today. 2x 1l bottles of Honda MTF-3, and new washers. Cox Motor Parts seems like a good supplier.

It's only on 62k miles now (I've had nearly 6000 very happy miles in this car in the 8 months I've had it) so pretty low mileage and everything else about the car is pretty mint, minimal surface corrosion anywhere and nothing structural that I can see.

Thankyou for your advice!

I still have a 2003 Mk1 Jazz owned from new (passed between family, 2 sons), ~ 90k mileage.
Would you mind sharing name & contact details please, in case we need it?
Thank you.

Jocko, do you still have the details of the garage / workshop that did your gearbox repair please?

Last week I changed the gearbox oil in my 2006 1.4Dsi manual transmission, 32000 miles from new.
I mistakenly thought the Jazz gearbox was sealed-for-life unit, so had never changed the oil.
I do not have the official service manual ( I wish I could buy one) only Haynes.
Haynes states 72000 miles or 6 years for change interval, or 36000 miles or 3 years for cars used for short journeys.
My car, in spite of the low mileage, only used for long journeys, the old oil was in god condition, and after the fill with new Honda oil, could not detect any change in operation.
I do not think your over-age oil will have caused any new issues.

Yes, I changed the oil and it was still a golden colour similar to the stuff that went in. Gearbox issues only consist of the input shaft bearing in my case, which is a Honda issue, not my specific car. Thanks for your response :)
