Clutch Life?
« on: October 09, 2018, 10:52:59 PM »
Just wondering what sort of life owners are getting from their clutch?

I'm on 81K (2006) and the original clutch seems to be fine.

my 2003 is on about 77000 miles (mainly town driving as it wasn't our main family car), and seems fine, I recently changed the fluid which made a big difference to the pedal feel and made clutch control easier. impossible to tell if it's nearly worn out or not but so far so good.

Is there hydraulic clutch fluid in the Jazz or do you mean the gearbox oil?

Yes there is hydraulic fluid, it uses Dot4 brake fluid, I don't know about the later ones but on mine there is a small reservoir next to the brake fluid reservoir for topping up, the bleeding nipple is at the front of the engine near the top, I had to remove the air filter housing to get to it. I only changed it because I was already doing the brake fluid and it looked quite dark, I didn't expect it to make much difference except to clean the system through, but I was pleasantly surprised, it gave a much more substantial feel and more controllable.

If you don't ride the clutch (on hills to save selecting neutral  pulling handbrake on ) the clutch should easily last 150 to 200K.  Just use the clutch for what it is meant for (changing gear and moving off normally) and you should never need to replace it ( unless it gets contaminated with oil ). I have experienced clutch 'judder' when pulling away - very slight on Jazz but Civic has been more violent  - I just sat on the drive and put into first gear and deliberately slipped the clutch ( to polish the flywheel face) and clutch was perfect after - the only one of my cars that ever needed a new clutch was a Vauxhall Viva (say no more) - I did 190,000 miles in my 1996 Civic and original clutch was still perfect.

You do need to replace manual gearbox oil at 70,000 though,  and bleed clutch hydraulics every few years to keep fluid clean and free from corrosive moisture ( brake / clutch fluid attracts and absorbs moisture - hygroscopic,  which  can cause corrosion in system - as well as making clutch and brake operation a bit dodgy).   Probably the main cause of cylinder failure on clutch and brakes is water in the fluid corroding the metal.

Some numpty at Honda seemed to think it was a good idea to fit dual mass flywheel into MK3 Jazz,  that has proved to be an expensive, unreliable option on cars up to now and was fitted to Diesels to try to smooth out the lumpy power delivery, it has no place on a small petrol car.

According to the wad of paperwork, mine was replaced at 113K, which I don't think is bad considering it was a driving instructor's car for the majority of that life. It's done 160K now and is holding up pretty well, to say it's been brutalised by learner drivers.

My previous no.1 car had over 160K on the original clutch before retirement, as culzean says it has more to do with your style of driving than anything else.

I feel I am a lot harder on the Jazz clutch than I have been with any other car I have ever owned. I think it is a consequence of the ropey throttle control on my Jazz, and a very unforgiving clutch.
In over 50 years driving I have only had to replace one clutch. My Saab had done high miles (not many with with me driving). The only cars I have owned, and put a lot of miles on, were automatics!

Thanks for that. I had no idea there was hydraulic fluid for the clutch!

Next Summer I intend to do the gearbox Oil and will do this fluid also.

Looking back over the work that’s been done to my MK1 2002 se sport it had a clutch change at 90,000 miles back in 2012! So fingers crossed that’ll see me through. Currently on 114,000 miles.

I had the clutch replaced at 69,000 miles on my 2004 Jazz. The previous owner use to ride the clutch and on the test drive there was some slipping particularly when accelerating up inclines. I hope that my driving style ensures that it will last much longer, I would expect at least 90,000-100,000 miles with normal driving.

Well, according to the paperwork, mine was changed at 113K, and most of that was learner drivers - so I would think you would do that more than comfortably.

Hello guys! I own a 2004 CVT jazz and I've been told that I have to replace the clutch. Is there someone who's done that and could recommend a specialist offering a reasonable price in Berkshire?
