Replacement tyre choice for Jazz 1.4 ES
« on: September 15, 2015, 01:19:57 PM »
It is time to replace all 4 of the Dunlop SP31 175/65 R15 84T on my 2010 Jazz 1.4 ES.   Dunlop SP31 appear to be unobtainable, and am now contemplating Michelin Energy.
Has anyone any experience of fitting a brand that they have regretted ?   Is there a tyre to avoid because of excessive wear or increased road noise ?

I put four Michelin Energy tyres on my GE recently and I am very pleased with them, particularly the lower noise level.
They perform very well in all other respects as well.

I swear by Michelin Energy tyres on the Jazz, I get 37500 miles from the front tyres and 75000 miles from the rear tyres, but that includes a lot of motorway miles.

I did try a pair of Yokohamas on the front, but wore them out in less than 20,000 miles, so I went back to Michelins. Unfortunately they aren't always easily available, but www.blackcircles.com do them.

Michelin Energy tyres every time they have to be the longest lasting tires going and the grip is really good too even in the 80's michelin were long lasting and on my jazz way over 30,000 on the fronts

ats always have them in stock for my 1.2 but i run 175/65/15 i don't know about the 16 inch wheels

Order through Black Circles with fitting at ATS and its quite a bit cheaper than going direct with ATS

Its your choice, remember the only part of your Jazz on the road is the tyre print.
Would you buy a Jazz fited with XXX tyres?

Tyres have a tread wear rating embossed on the side wall. I think this is a US market requirement and not well publicised in this country. Well worth researching the subject and comparing ratings for different tyres/ different prices. Higher wear rating tyres are more expensive (!) but last longer (!). So how long you are planning to keep the car might also be factor.

Use the links at the bottom of the web page for each manufacturer shown.

Having replaced Pirelli's on our Jazz with Michelin Energy green tyres back in February, I would recommend these tyres all day and every day. I did a post at the time and mentioned the shortcomings of the Pirellis. On a section of bendy road I use once a fortnight, there are four telecom covers on a left hand bend right where the nearside tyres sit. With Pirellis in wet weather the car would do quite a side slip even when reducing speed. The Michelin's take this in their stride. Around the bend like a train on it's tracks.
PS not like the Beemer owner having his second set of tyres fitted to his X5, alongside the Jazz, in less than 20,000 miles at some £250 plus a corner. See the Jazz does have it's benefits even when it's fitted with it's 16 inch wheels.

'Fatlad' has a 2006 Jazz so he will likely have 14" wheels if they are steels.
Kumho are a perfectly good tyre, but might not have the longevity of a top brand.

Thanks very much to all who replied to my query.   It looks like Michelin Energy are the ones to go for.   Topic now closed as far as I am concerned.

Hi,  my 2012, EX auto purchased March 2015 with 15k on the clock had Dunlop's fitted and I changed them after a few days to Michelin Energy 16" and as soon as I pulled out of the fitters I noticed how quite they were and I am so glad that I bought them, the ride is much smoother and I 100% trust the tyres.

One of my Michelins had to be replaced due to a bulge in the sidewall. Probably pot-hole damage, it can be hard work avoid the things round this way. I noticed it when removing the offside rear mudflap on the car (and seeing how the bumper went together) it was only an ever-so-slight bulge, but I wasn't going to chance it very long before sorting it out. The tyre originally was on the nearside front, but I rotated the wheels around at c. 10k.

I think a 70 or 80 profile tyre would have taken it in its stride.

The yellow Jazz has Continental Premium Contact 2s and going by the date codes, these were only fitted last summer. I find these tyres very good too.
