Author Topic: Is the i-VTEC engine supposed to be so noisy at idle? (Read 1612 times)

I've just got a 1.4 i-VTEC 2012 Jazz and the engine almost sounds like a mini diesel engine to my ears, I'm used to my CRV with a B20 engine that sounds like a sewing machine at idle it's so smooth.
I had a look on Youtube and it seems to be the way they sound.

Anyone else noticed this?

You can hear it crystal clear in the clip below from 4:39, my engine sounds pretty much identical to that

my 09 ex sound a bit similar to this, but quieter.

The noises come from the top end, the rest of the engine is so quiet that the rocker noises really stand out. I don't think the valve gear on the vtec is the quietest.

I also saw a CRV Gen 2 video on Youtube with iVtec and it also had the tractor sound.

My 2012 Jazz 1.4 is pretty quiet when cold (and warm)..

Maybe I am growing deaf (er)...

The GD IDSi twin spark was so quiet at idle that you had to look at rev counter to see if it was running, the 1.4 VTEC in GE ( MK2 ) is almost as quiet - try using 5W-30 instead of thinner oils like 0W-20 and it may be quieter.
