I went and looked at a nice 2nd gen Jazz 2012, the radio display was faded. The numbers on either side of the digital display were very faint, is there any fix for this or must the whole radio be replaced?

Could it possibly be from a low battery?
The one rear window winder would only work with the car running, then the winder worked right after turning the car off again, which may mean the battery is a bit weak.

Just so we are on the same page I am referring to the digital display in the middle of the dash just above the CD slot and below the air events.
Like so:

If the display was not restored to correct function when the engine was running, I would say that that particular problem isn't battery related.

If the radio is faulty, it may be repairable, but you can buy a used, complete replacement head unit for around 30GBP over here in the UK. It certainly wouldn't put me off buying a car anyway, especially if you can use it to bash the price down further.

Even if you couldn't find one at a breaker locally, you could probably find someone on eBay that would ship internationally - I've shipped items to SA without any problems.

That's a good point about the display should be fine when the engines running if it were a low battery issue.
It's the first one I've seen with issues, the stock radio and digital display seem pretty robust on the Jazz.

My clock has the same issue with the RH digit.

Happened after a very hot day with car in sun.

As far as I know, placing in freezer for 24 hours may solve the issue with the display.
I have not bothered.

I have also seen people mention heat on another forum, I think on the Civic digital display.
Is yours also on a Jazz?

Hi, Don't know if you have resolved problem, but I wondered when you saw car, were the headlights turned on?

Reason for asking is that (also wonder if this happens with other drivers) when I turn lights on, even just side lights, the digital display above the steering wheel goes fainter (but now having to think if the radio display does the same) but is still readable.

Gonna have to double check & come back. But am certain about the 'car computer' readout above steering wheel column and also the lights/illumination around speedo & other 'dials'.

Is this the same for others?

Mines faded whether the headlights are on or off.
The behaviour you mentioned seems correct, the dimming when the headlights are on. Apparently the zeroing/dimmer knob at the cluster also affects the radio backlight.

I'm only picking up the car tomorrow but I'll post a pic of exactly what I am referring to

Likely to be one of two problems;

i) deterioration of the connection of the ribbon from the LCD. These are ususally bonded to the pcb using a special (and very expensive) conductive tape made by 3M, which conducts through point to point, but not sideways. It's very difficult to repair successfully, and requires some heat and a way of clamping the joint. Carefully clamping and re-heating the existing joint is sometimes successful. Specialist job really.

or...

ii) The polarising filter in the display has become damaged by sunlight. You can check this by holding a polarising filter sheet in front of the display, and rotate it to see if the digits magically appear. If it works, you can disassemble the unit and affix a piece of the filter to the front of the lcd display, cut at the correct rotational angle. You can buy the sheet on eBay, or a good source is scrap LCD displays from laptops - if you pull one apart, there's a polarising sheet inside.

I would go for the latter as being most likely where you are, and easier to check anyway.

The polarising filter being damaged from the sun sounds like a fair call because from googling plenty people mentioned getting the fade after very hot weather.
Could I troubleshoot using some polarised sunglasses?

Might work using the same technique, try it!

If it works, it really is like magic.
