Look At These Shockers!
« on: February 24, 2023, 03:35:42 PM »
Whilst getting my Jazz MOT'd yesterday at a local garage, I saw some shocking tyres stacked outside. Who could be reckless enough to run a car with such bald rubber?

Oh, Jazz passed the mot. Advisories for front tyres and pads. Tyres replaced today. The front pads still have about 4mm left, so I think Mr MOT man was being a bit over zealous.  ;D

It never ceases to amaze me how little attention some people give to tyres.

I check mine monthly, and before/after a long journey, and start thinking about changing them @4mm or so.

... and to think that then they could be sold on as 'part worn'  ::)

Those tyres are probably still borderline legal, terrible though they may be. Many motorists never look near their tyres from one year to the next. It is only when the MOT inspector points out the state of them that they fork out for new ones. I seldom pass my parked car without feeling the tread depth. I am paranoid about tyres.

I admit it requires careful thinking regarding the weather, but I like to utilize the tread as long as it is legal. I had tyres, which I used several summers only from May to August, because it is the least rainy time in Finland. Those tyres were such nice to drive.

I must admit, I find myself checking tyres of parked cars if they have a wheel turned. The state of some folks motors are absolutely ridiculous.

Also, I do find myself smirking when I see a 'posh' motor with budget tyres. A neighbour has an Audi SUV that is only a few years old and must owe him a tidy sum. He has just put new tyres on it......Landsail !!  ???

I can forgive an old banger on budget rubber, but surely if you've £20k for a used motor, you can afford some decent treads?

My brother has a BMW and a set of four tyres cost him just over £1K.

I read some time ago that Porsche demand that all 4 tyres are replaced together.

If you get a puncture then it's 4 tyres ?
Let's be careful out there !

Enter U Tube and search for "Customer says"

Cue a series of shocking tyres - which make the above tyres look new, brake disks worn paper thin ,pads through to backing plates, and bodies so ravaged by rust it is remarkable they have not folded in two.

Makes you realise how effective the MOT test is.

An MOT after three years was introduced when cars could have serious rust and structural weakness by then. Modern cars very seldom fail an MOT after the first three years for anything other than tyres, worn-out brakes or defective lights - and these can all be the case from one year on.

... which is why I am in favour of a MOT from year one, not that I can ever see that happening.

My Fabia failed its first MOT for anything other than a defective tail light in December - just before I bought it- at 13 years old.
