The balljoints are pressed into the wishbones, so you do need some specialist tools to replace them.
It's easier to replace the whole wishbone, complete with balljoint and bushes, they're not that expensive to buy - less than £25 for a new one, and it will save you a lot of work. You'll need a decent ½" socket set, torque wrench, axle stands, possibly a breaker bar, and the usual basic workshop tool kit.
You can actually do the job without splitting the hub from the driveshaft, but it makes access a bit more tricky, and you have to be careful not to pull the driveshaft out of the gearbox.
Before you start, you could do with verifying that it is indeed the balljoint. When the bottom balljoint sounds like that, the rubber is usually split - if you can squirt some lubricant into the joint and the noise stops, that will prove that it is the balljoint. You can get these noises from other parts of the suspension, but balljoint is most likely.
