Noisy suspension?
« on: January 19, 2020, 06:03:01 PM »

Look at this this noise is coming from front near side of car when rocking the car from side to side.

Don’t think it is the droplinks and before I replaced them it this was a knocking noises.

Can someone diagnose squeaking noise from the u tube link?

Thanks

Jonathan

Definitely front?

Sounds like metal to metal. Bottom ball joint?

Cheers sparky.

That’s sound right

Do u need to get the front hub away from the car 🚗 to get to ball joint more easily.

Is this something a home mechanic can do, any special tools.

Thanks j

The balljoints are pressed into the wishbones, so you do need some specialist tools to replace them.

It's easier to replace the whole wishbone, complete with balljoint and bushes, they're not that expensive to buy - less than £25 for a new one, and it will save you a lot of work. You'll need a decent ½" socket set, torque wrench, axle stands, possibly a breaker bar, and the usual basic workshop tool kit.

You can actually do the job without splitting the hub from the driveshaft, but it makes access a bit more tricky, and you have to be careful not to pull the driveshaft out of the gearbox.

Before you start, you could do with verifying that it is indeed the balljoint. When the bottom balljoint sounds like that, the rubber is usually split - if you can squirt some lubricant into the joint and the noise stops, that will prove that it is the balljoint. You can get these noises from other parts of the suspension, but balljoint is most likely.

When mine went it was the large bush at the back that had actually dropped right out of the wishbone. It cannot go anywhere. It is too big to go up through the hole, and attached at the top so cannot drop any further down. Bolt 17 goes through it.
