Failed to start this morning....
« on: February 05, 2024, 09:27:41 AM »
Went out to our 61 plate Jazz this morning after parking it in it's parking space after returning from shopping Saturday. it turned over, but didnt start. I found the Inertia switch, pressed it, and it clicked, after spinning the starter for a couple of seconds it came alive and ran healthily. Is this a sign of a failing inertia switch ? no one has 'bumped' it as it is not accessible to other vehicles where it is parked...

The inertia switch is quite sensitive, even a mediocre thump on the dash can trigger it
Let's be careful out there !

Its really that sensitive Kremmen ? We have had this car for ten years and done 90000 miles in her, its has never done this before, but at least we both know where it is if it happens again !

Check your battery if less than 13v give it a charge overnight or at least 6 hrs.

I had a bit of end dash trim pop out at one corner, on a Civic, and tapping it back in triggered it
Let's be careful out there !

Yeah, I looked at the voltages... 12.5 on test, 10.2 on crank, so I outed it and got a new one :( It was about 7 years old to be fair, but didnt realise that low volts would trigger the inertia switch....

So, OP, tell us where the switch is...in case we're similarly caught out!

In the Passenger footwell/drop the cover from under glovebox area/ look to the extreme left where the curved side trim runs from the bottom of the door above the floor pan toward the front/put your hand down inside the gap above the trim and you will feel what feels like a very short metal tube about 30mm wide that is secured to the inside of the door pillar with a soft rubber top to it/Press the centre of that rubber top and you will note a physical and audible click as the switch resets/Hope this explains it well enough  :)
