Location of the cat?
« on: April 05, 2021, 07:09:00 PM »
Evening all

I had thought that the cat had been moved on the Mk3 to make it less easy to nick.  I had a look underneath and there's something that looks suspiciously like a cat within easy reach of the offise (driver's side) sill!  :o

Is it me?

Believe it is the Particulate Filter, similar to those fitted to diesel-engined vehicles.

The thing near the offside sill is the centre exhaust box.

The back end of the cat is visible under the car, it's on the pipe up to the manifold - as the front pipe is inaccessible, the cat is pretty safe.

Just for info, other than diesel, particulate filters are generally only used on direct injection petrol (gasoline - GDI) engines, port injection as a rule doesn't result in any significant particulates. See the emission regs, Euro6, GDI has a particulate limit, port injection doesn't (no need). One of the downsides of GDI unfortunately.

I know. I mistakenly thought we were talking about the Mk 4.

OK folks.  Thanks for the replies.  I'm reassured.

Cheers.
