If you won the big jackpot on the Euro millions, but the government had mandated that a family was only allowed one car for all their needs, what would you go for?
I'll have to give this serious thought myself.

Defenitely nothing from this millennium. Maybe 70's-80's Mercedes W123 estate T280E automatic with front bench seat and auxiliary 3rd row seat. Well made, reliable, no electronic systems and Mercedes has good support for older cars, so that spares will be available for long time.

No question..... an Aston DB6 estate (I have seen one) for me. Then I can get the wife's wheelchair in the back :)

The W123 is reckoned by many to be the finest estate car ever built. But with that money available, spares would not really be an issue with any car. Would you really want something that is 50 years behind in safety and technology, though? If you have to drive it every day, for all your needs, would it not get a bit wearing.

I am actually quite confident that I don't want today's safety and technology. Having my new Jazz for 7 months now has proven that quite clearly. I'm annoyed every time some auto/assist/warning system or feature activates and interferes my control of the car. I like much more driving 80's and 90's cars that I have. I just would not like to expose those to salty winter roads. I think it is very possible, that after couple of years I will sell Jazz and go back to some reliable older car without any active safety features also for winter use.
For certain reason I have been driving my 1989 Peugeot 309 quite a lot for last few months and it is so liberating feeling to have full control instead of driving captivated by the nanny state systems.

You should be able to permanently turn these 'driver aids' off. Not have to turn them off every journey.

Use some of your Euro millions to get an Auto electrician/engineer to disable them all.

What a great question, and some brilliant answers already.
Its a tough one, but what want you want is a CO-OP car with input from different manufacturers.
Honda, they can do the reliability. Toyota can lend a hand too. :D
Ford and Lotus can sort the handling. It's got to corner!
The Germans pre 1990 can do the build quality, such as the W123 referrenced.
Citroen and Peugeot can do the ride comfort 1970's style, comfy
Styling, hmmm, Accord Aerodeck for my money was a fine looking car. No, we'll leave it to Robert Opron and Flaminio Bertoni.
Value, that has to be Dacia's department!
British, we can do leather and wood, Rover P5 esq. :)
All of that said, Mk1 Skoda Octi Estate, 1.9 TDi, 130bhp 5sp, Silver, Sunroof, L+K trim with black leather. Xenon upgrade and I'm sending it off for a bit more sound proofing and a USB socket. 8) Oh, and some all season tyres, but I'm not too fussed about the EU label ratings :D

I take it you would send it off to a specialist to strip and rebuild the mechanicals, have the body resprayed, the underside powder coated and Ziebarted and the wheels restored and powder coated?

To be honest, I really like driving the car I have now. It's got all the knobs and buttons I want, but I would spend some of the money having it adapted so that it lifts up six inches, so you can get in and out of the damn thing.

Well I was kinda hoping you might find a nice new one for me Jocko. :D There was a 54 reg one on Ebay a few months ago to the exact spec I want with only 60k on the clock. It made £4000. Probably not a lot of money, but I didn't value it at that.
I wanted the TDi estate in silver when I went to buy my Octi in 2004, but the 1.6 petrol in dark green was half price, so being a tight wad, I saved the £.

Mines too low, it's lower than standard due to the ecoflex aerodynamics package. Can't knock the £30 tax though...

I had thought about a range of cars. Perhaps an estate car, but I will never need to transport anything that would need an estate. My gardner will take any garden waste away (as he does at present), if I need anything moved I'd hire a man with a van (or maybe two blondes with a van), and if I go on holiday I will send my luggage on ahead.
The Panamera will comfortably carry me and my wife wherever we need to go, and there is room in the back for the occasional passenger. It is a PHEV with a selectable electric mode with 30 miles range.
And I can take it up to Knockhill for the occasional track day!
