When I bought my first Honda - a Civic (the one that looks a bit like an overgrown Jazz) - I used a dealer in Ashton-under-Lyme. Family business with one other branch.

The car was used so no warranty issue and, if you did a low mileage, they would recommend doing 2 short annual services then a big one rather than alternating short services with the big ones (if that makes sense).

So the annual oil and filter change idea makes sense only doing the big service when the mileage justified it.

If I hadn't bought a new Jazz, that's the regime I would follow with an annual mileage of 3k per annum.

Whilst I myself would always go for annual servicing rather than skipping one or just oil change I can fully understand the logic in minimising the costs. However I would be careful about skipping cvt oil changes, which  I would suggest are essential to avoid a big bill down the line. It is one area I would not change from the Honda service plan.

I am not advocating changing anything from the Honda Service Plan. Most items are mileage-dependent, not time.

I think you will find that cvt oil change is time not mileage related.

2 years or 25,000 miles whichever comes first.

2 years or 25,000 miles whichever comes first so if you only do 3K a year you change it every two years. The same goes for oil and filter. Other items such as spark plugs are mileage limited. You wouldn't change them every two years if you had only done 6K. It is all down to common sense

Have your local garage change oil+ Honda filter do a pre MOT check . Then your away for another 12 months in your Jazz.

I have always done oil and filter changes at 5-6,000 miles. Which can be 4 months with the mileage I'm doing. I have a manual which the oil was done at 25,000. Air and cabin filters every 12,000. I wouldn't skimp on the cvt service.
Previous petrol mondeos both got to 200k treated similarly.

Odd how different manufacturers treat servicing.

Back in 2002 my 3.0 V6 Citroen C5 was 20k or 2 years !!!
Let's be careful out there !

Servicing intervals were often extended to make the cars more attractive to company transport managers to reduce fleet running costs.

In the 1960’s I had a flatmate with a Citroen Light 15, whose drive shaft universal joints needed greasing every 500 miles. It was a very comfortable car. The Citroen “Traction Avant” was the world’s first front-wheel drive car I think.

Maybe servicing intervals became longer because of technological advancements. Better materials, better tools , smaller tolerances. After let's say 1990, cutting costs became an issue and also because of computer simulations less material was used and parts were manufactured to last for 'a certain period' instead of 'as long as possible'. The last decade, when environmental / exhaust regulations became more strict, I can imagine that servicing is needed earlier to make sure the (very thin) oil remains functional etc.

Mrs W's 2012 Civic 1.8 petrol has done just under 4000 miles over the last year. It only ever gets used on longer journeys, so I won't be changing the oil for a few months yet. Lots of short journey I would though.
