Sound of Silence.
« on: October 27, 2019, 11:36:59 AM »
I was at the Audiologist on Friday, for a hearing test. My right ear is perfect, but my left ear is shot, with only the bass being heard (standing next to a very loud guitarist for a number of years. My brother stood the other side of him and he is deaf in his right ear!). Came away with a hearing aid, and it is brilliant.
Amazing what I can hear in the car now. Engine and road noise is no louder, but it is all the little things I can better hear now. I will never leave an indicator on by mistake, as the click clacking is extremely audible. I had a shopping bag behind the drivers seat and every corner I heard it crinkling and the shopping moving.
I am sure I will get used to these sounds and begin to filter them out, but I miss the Sound of Silence!

I played bass. Many a long year ago now though I still play and build guitars as a hobby now.

You certainly looked the part Jocko  ;)

What's the bass, looks like a Fender Jazz, but not quite?

It was a Precision lookalike. Some long forgotten Japanese copy.

Looks a very reasonable facsimile.  8)

My right ear is perfect.

Perfect for someone of your age, but you have probably lost a lot of high frequency hearing since you were a teenager.

It's good to have your hearing tested as you get older.  Well done.

I remember years ago my Dad's telly had a high frequency whistle. My Mum and Dad couldn't hear it but my brother and I were driven daft by it.

The reason I went for the test was because I was going increasingly deaf. I knew my hearing had deteriorated 15+ years ago but 5 years ago I bought a pair of Denon AH-D600 phones. The left side had poor high frequency output, but if I put the phones on back to front it was the other side that didn't work! Since then it has just got worse and my wife was getting more and more annoyed when I ignored her. So I made the appointment.

I have had industrial hearing damage for some 40+ years.

I don't mind admitting. The first evening, with my new hearing aid. I sat in the garden, and cried.
I could hear the birds singing again. After so many, silent years......

I've had a similar problem, but with the roles reversed - it's me that was being ignored.

Other half went for a hearing test, they said her hearing was fine  :-X

I guess she was just ignoring me, after all.  ::)

Reminds me of Richard Whitely joke on Countdown.
Man mentions to Doctor that he suspects his wife is going deaf but will not go to see about it. Asks Dr how he can convince her she needs help.
Dr suggests that he talks to her when she is not looking at him and can't see his  lips moving.
Man goes into kitchen while wife is at sink. From the door he asks "what's for dinner Dear? " No reply.
Man moves closer "what's for dinner Dear? " No reply.
Moves closer still "what's for dinner Dear? "

Woman shouts " For the third bloody time it's chicken"
