Motoring Stories
« on: January 21, 2021, 01:05:05 PM »
I saw an advert for a Ford Cortina the other day, it reminded me of someone I used to work with many years ago.
He was selling his Cortina and decided to wind back the speedo to reduce his mileage.
We all said that was wrong but he was having non of it and planned to do it that weekend.
On Monday back at work we said did you clock your Cortina.
He said:
Don't talk to me about that car, I took the speedo out and there was a label on the back of it and someone had hand written on the label

" Oh no.....not again "

It had been done to him before he bought the car :)

Anyone else got any motoring Stories to make us chuckle during this semi-lockdown period.
It will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end !

Several years ago a work friend was relating how he had come across a person under the bonnet of a Morris Minor trying to get it to start having lost his keys.  My friend, being an electrical engineer kindly hot wired it for him.

It was only as he drove away that the thought crossed his mind.  I wonder if it was his car?

An engineering apprentice mate of mine bought an old faded red Austin 1100 and decided to Tee Cut it.  He used a power hand drill to buff it up.  It was truly a fantastic finish when he was done.

Unlike his Father's less that 3 month old white car next to it on the drive which was covered in pink spots.

It took him months to pay back the cost of a respray.

Have you ever read the story of Gunther Holtorf? If not, grab a coffee and a quiet corner and read about him.

Thanks for posting. I'd never head of Gunter Holtorf and his amazing G-wagen 'Otto'. Fantastic read.  :D

It's the only car journey in North Korea I've read about. Fascinating.

Couple of quote from the BBC article;

"They would both scoff at younger Germans who have, by comparison, such a high standard of living but “an even higher standard of complaining"  :D

"even after nearly 900,000km Otto still did not consume oil, the engine cylinders had never needed re-lining and the pistons had never been replaced."  8)

Many years ago while in the RAF I was posted to RAF Wittering on the A1 near Stamford. My family lived in Slough up the A4 so I would get lifts to London, or thumb it, and get a bus or train to home. One of the guys I travelled with, Ed, had an 'Auntie' Rover and since he was a National Serviceman we wondered how he could afford to run it. We were travelling up the A1 one Sunday night when we were pulled over by a police car who advised the Ed that his offside rear light was out and could he swap the rear light bulbs over for which he was loaned a screwdriver.
Job done and with that second sight that policeman have he asked to see in the boot. Calm as you like Ed opened the boot to reveal a One Armed Bandit, an illegal, at the time, gaming machine. " And what are you doing with that." asked the policeman. " It's a present for my Grandmother in Doncaster." replied Ed. " Oh that's OK." said the policeman, " Get that other light fixed, off you go."
It transpired that Ed was delivering one armed bandits to working mens clubs up north from suppliers in London.
