TPMS on 2015 models
« on: July 02, 2015, 11:31:10 PM »
Hello,

I'm in the process of buying a 2015 Jazz EX. As it has 16" wheels its ride is slightly firm, so I've been thinking about switching to the 15" alloy wheels from a hybrid. I spoke to a dealer about buying a set of these wheels but was told they are not suitable due to the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

I assume that the whole Jazz range now has TPMS and therefore I'd need to find wheels from a 2015 hybrid for them to be compatible?

I found it interesting that you can buy the wheel sensors separately. I found them on Ebay for £37 each. I don't know if or how the new wheels differ or if theses sensors could be retrofitted to the older wheels.

Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

TMPS is going to be a headache as I think all EU cars have to have it. Other than that, I don't understand technically why it couldn't be done. There must be some other reason.

Apparently on some TPMS systems the ECU has to be told if a sensor has been changed and the new one has to coded in before it will communicate. The are only expected to last 2 to 5 years and will no doubt be a target for thieves as they have a resale value  :(

http://www.national.co.uk/tpms-sensor-valve-service-and-replacement.aspx

and they are not cheap  :o

they will be tested come MOT time and any sensor not working is a fail.

according to article

The EU estimates that the under-inflation of tyres is globally responsible each year for:

20 million litres of unnecessary fuel consumed
2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions
    200 million prematurely worn tyres
    9% of accidents involving fatalities
    41% of accidents involving injury

always worries me when the EU estimates stuff,  and those figures are global,  not just in EU countries - you would expect people in EU to be more aware of tyre pressures and not need this kit

Is TPMS another  reason for not supplying a spare wheel ?

Main reasons for not supplying a spare wheel

cost saving (but not to the buyer)
so that manufacturer can boast extra boot space.
weight saving (to meet whatever new EU reg limits car weight etc.)
looking for last decimal place of Co2 to take it under 100
saving the planet by having one less wheel and tyre per car

and lastly,  most drivers these days seem to call out AA / RAC / Green flag etc  to change a wheel anyway, whether through lack of knowledge or just not wanting to get their hands dirty.

If they have not got a spare wheel how can an emergency service change it for them?  ::)

Hi
Does this mean that the spare wheel a lot of us have purchased is totally superfluous with this new fangled tpms should we wish to buy a new mk3 jazz with tpms????
And if we can use our non tpms wheels for emergency purposes ie a flat will there be Insurance implications????.
Regards
Rick

tpms are like auto lights and wipers and autolocking and start buttons totally useless and costly and more trouble than they are worth just so they can jack the price of the car up

Hi Dave
I wouldn't have it by choice I am more than capable of checking my tyre pressures once a week. Have done it for the last 40 yrs so I don't suppose it's going to change but looking to change my jazz and the newer vehicle has it on. Again like auto lights/wipers I am quite capable of making that descion as to Its dark or raining!!!!

To those capable of checking tyre pressures once a week (or as I've noticed Michelin say these days, once a MONTH  :o ) vote with your wallet/purse and keep your current car!

Just checked on my 2015 ES+ and it does have TPMS. There are 3.5 pages about it in the manual!
I'm carrying an alloy spare I bought some time ago for my EX and see that I will have to have a sensor fitted to comply with the system. I'll be asking my dealership about this.
It does say in the manual that using a puncture repairing agent  could cause a problem and the sensor may need replacing!
This site should help! http://www.national.co.uk/tpms-sensor-valve-service-and-replacement.aspx

That's the same site I put a link in for but i noticed that they don't list Honda cars on their drop down list for searching for sensors
