How to add satnav to an EX model
« on: April 23, 2021, 05:21:39 PM »
Hi Folks, new Jazz owner/forum member so thanks in advance for any tips you can offer here. Just bought a 2018 EX model from a reputable dealer in the UK. Large navigation system booklet in the paperwork but just noticed that there appears to be no satnav option in the infotainment unit...clearly I overlooked this in the advert. Is it possible to add satnav and if yes, how? Thx very much for any tips. Mav74

Hi Mav
I believe you cannot retrospectively upgrade the Honda Infotainment system to have the Satnav feature. You have to buy the EX Navi version of the car for this. I think other members will confirm this when they see your post.
My 2018 SE got the SatNav booklet with it too, which confused me at first since only the SE Navi version has SatNav!
I don't use SatNav personally so I will leave it to our more learned members to advise you on a workaround such as Google Maps on your phone.

Regards
Phil

Infotainment units with firmware RC 6.1 or lower can easily install third party android apps such as Copilot and Sygic.
Units with firmware RC7 or RC8 must  be downgraded to RC6.1 following these instructions https://www.cmdroid.com/
The firmware downloadable from cmdroid must be installed ONLY on the left  hand drive HRV sold in Brasil or Argentina, in case your firmware is "too recent" you must reflash the unit with the right  hand drive version RC6.1 for Jazz sold in UK, version without satnav. Consider that the hardware is different in units with and without OEM satnav, so you cannot use the satnav unit firmware to upgrade your unit: you cannot put the oem Garmin software in your unit.

To summarise:
1. You can’t retrofit navigation software to a non-Navi version of the car.
2. You can instal 3rd party apps such as Sygic but it can be complicated. Plus, IIRC, that procedure involves hacking the system to remove the settings that prevent you illegally displaying video whilst driving.

It’s far easier to get a stand-alone satnav or a decent holder for a phone and use that for navigation (hands-free of course). And before you ask, there is something called MirrorLink which purports to enable you to mirror a phone screen on the car’s screen. Very few people have reported getting that to work, it seems to be something to do with the phone software not being backwards-compatible with the older version on the car.

I have sat nav on my phone and it works great. Currently using TomTom Go but after free trial I don't know if I will pay the subscription. Probably start using Sygic again.

Jocko, ColinB, Jazzaro & Philno, many thanks for your very informative replies. In the 60's Honda's ad campaign slogan for their famous Cub motorbike was - 'You meet the nicest people on a Honda'. I suggest they add the word 'forum' to the end of that. Thx again and great to be in the H Club.

Good quote! I've seen those adds on Youtube. Most Honda folk seem friendly enough.  :D

If it's the same as the Civic then it needs a new wiring loom, GPS unit and a complete dash strip and rebuild.
Let's be careful out there !

You also need to be careful about the radio code. This is stored in the car's ECU so the head unit can only be used in that car. It must be possible to get round this (dealers can replace head units) but it may not be a simple procedure. After all, the whole radio code thing is designed to make it hard to use a unit that may have come from a dodgy source.

What you need is a Pam Ayres Satnav

MY SATNAV by Pam Ayres

I have a little Satnav, It sits there in my car
A Satnav is a driver's friend, it tells you where you are.
I have a little Satnav,  I've had it all my life
It's better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife.

It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive
"It's sixty miles an hour", it says, "You're doing sixty five".
It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever, safe to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene.
It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear
And taking this into account, it specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver, has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice.
It fills me up with counselling, each journey's pretty fraught
So why don't I exchange it, and get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm properly fed
It washes all my shirts and things, and keeps me warm in bed!
Despite all these advantages, and my tendency to scoff
I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot
