Is it my imagination or does the mk2 feel 'thinner' than the mk1? The bodywork just seems flimsier.

The MK2 is just a more modern design... pretty much all motor companies now use high strength materials to build vehicles ( like bake hardened boron steel sheet ), the higher strength means thinner material can be used which reduces the vehicle weight - which saves fuel every trip. 

And despite lighter weight modern vehicles are stronger and safer than ever - see this thread.
