Alloy Wheel dust barrier
« on: June 16, 2013, 01:59:02 PM »
Has anyone here got recommendations for one or more of the numerous sprays and polishes on the market for enabling brake dust to be easily removed from alloys? Thanks

I'm no expert but the detailing section on Civinfo.com is brilliant for suggestions. Have a look at this thread which involved some pretty dirty wheels.

Thanks for taking the time. Looks like good stuff, however, my jazz is brand new and what I want to do is to protect the alloys so that they never get into that state. I wash them weekly but would still like to put a brake dust barrier on.

Any protective wax should do the job. I found that, on my Civic, Autoglym Super Resin Polish did the job and I didn't get the build up but Turtle Wax would do just as well.

Once it gets a grip, it is a real pest to get rid of so you are right to think prevention rather than cure.

I put a couple layers of "Jetseal" (109?) followed by a couple of layers of Meguiars NXT metal polysh on my NT03 before putting them on my car and it has worked a treat!

Definitely recommend putting some sort of protective layer on the wheels as it makes cleaning them a heck lot easier.

Friend with alloy wheels uses nappy cleaner solutiom.  I didn't ask for the precise reason, in case I got a rude reply, but his wheels always look immaculate

Thankyou to all who answered.

What I have done so far: Washed and dried wheels. Put on a coat of MER Ultimate car polish followed by a spray of diamondbrite Alloy wheel protection which I got from a neighbour. So hopefully it will work.

Hope the spray on treatment works. I'd be interested because, unlike my Civic which had only 5 spokes, the alloys on the Jazz have some really hard to get to bits. Cleaning with a brush for alloys is OK but applying polish is less easy. A spray on might be the answer.

I do use Autoglym Wheel Seal (spray on one) with a polishing cloth, so far good.

I use Triplewax Waterless Wash (never to wash the paintwork  :P ). It cleans the wheels quickly and leaves a protective barrier.

I also use it on the glass and to remove bird mess.

You might want to try 'Carpro Iron-x' to get rid of stubborn brake dust build up when cleaning - works a treat! Then use a wheel wax like 'Poorboys wheel wax' - this makes washing wheels so much easier in the future.

My alloys were filthy but cleaned up very well this afternoon when I used Astonish Wheel Cleaner. It had been sitting in my garage for some time and cost £1.49 at a discount store. The Kent Quality Alloy Wheel Cleaning Brush I used with it I bought for around 99p.

Spray on the cleaner, use the brush to reach awkward areas, and then hose off. Just like that.
