Automatic Gearbox not changing down on hills
« on: December 27, 2023, 09:23:55 AM »
My 2019 automatic petrol Honda jazz slows right down on hills, when I try to accelerate nothing happens, tried taking foot off accelerater and booting it to the floor but no luck.
It seems like it needs to change down to a lower gear but nothing is happening.
We have had the car for over a year and the previous owner was disabled and only did a 1000 miles a year so the car has only 7000 miles on it.

Would you mind providing more info, Has your Jazz always had this issue?
When was your Jazz last serviced Any changes or faults appearing just before the lack of acceleration?

When you put the gearstick in S mode, can you use the paddles for shifting gears?

Just tried the paddles all working fine and quite good fun.in my post I forgot to mention that this is my wife’s car which gets little use and I drive it once a week to give it a bit of a run.

Sounds like it is fine if the paddles are working. If it is CVT then surely the whole point is that it does not shift down a gear on hills. My UK model Jazz is manual but my Japanese Fit is CVT and it does not emulate a gear change on hills - the revs just go up as the CVT adjusts to demand if I give it more throttle.

From this I think we are all assuming that you are going up a hill.  But then you say:

It seems like it needs to change down to a lower gear but nothing is happening.

Which would indicate that you are going down a hill and somehow it has changed to a higher ratio which is holding it back.

It would be  nice if you could clarify, but either way I think there is something amiss.

Going uphill ?
Going  downhill ?

Page in Owners Manual - 414 onward , may help.

Intelligent Speed Limiter?
Adjustable Speed Limiter?

Quote from manual ~ "The intelligent speed limiter may not hold the set
speed limit when driving downhill. If this occurs, slow
down by depressing the brake pedal"

Binding Brakes?

I have had that on mine and once I had a HGV behind me flashing me as I was going too slow but the car just would not change down. It got stuck in "no mans land"
BUT
Im wondering if the increase in performance I got after the rear tyres were changed  also improves this problem.
I will find a hill
