will battery charger damage these stop start batteries?
« on: April 13, 2020, 06:56:45 PM »
i know these batteries are lead acid but they are deep cycle and can take lots more starts than non stop/start batteries plus have glass inside etc

my question is will my battery charger damage my battery on full or trickle charge, it is a quite modern charger or do you need a special charger for these stop/start batteries ?

thanks

it is a challenge xtreme model MCH12A

Is that not a selector switch on the front to allow you to select battery type? Image too blurred to read RH but LH says Normal.

This one charges AGM batteries
(up to 110 amp/hour battery on AGM setting) https://www.smarterchargers.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=53

ok,  mine is similar to yours it has lights for fully charged etc so will switch off when it gets there its a few years old but i never used it on an AGM battery before, it has full or trickle and normal or gel settings though

so if i set it to normal and trickle it should be ok ?

cheers

Hi. Have had a look online and cant find a manual for your charger. The switch is for a Gel Cell battery. A stop start battery is a glass mat AGM type. so I guess not suitable. Cheers.

Found this: http://www.thelongestlecture.com/charge-agm-battery-with-normal-charger/

thanks i think mine will be ok as it switches itself off after full charge and also has overload protection, as its an older charger but it is an automatic one and doesnt have a agm switch just use trickle and normal settings should be ok

its normal or gel but it is an automatic charger with overload protection and auto stop and is a 12amp charger

AGM charging requirements from external charger are pretty much the same as GEL and flooded, they are all lead acid batteries.  But some of the charging stuff built into cars these days will get confused and not do its job properly - in fact as Ford owners found out fitting the wrong battery type can really screw up the charging and leave you with a flat battery.

thanks for all the replys, i have done some research and will prob replace my charger with a agm one as i dont want to take the risk of damaging the battery or the charge system on the alternator just for the sake of £50

also i want one with a screen and also is a small one so i can keep it in the engine bay when charging
