Steering Pulling to the left
« on: October 31, 2020, 11:37:26 PM »
Writing on behalf of my ex pupil who has a MK3. Suffered a puncture and drove for a while before stopping. After new tyre was fitted, felt steering pulling to that left. Did the alignment and changed the wheels around etc but still no good. Took it to local dealer but they did the alignment again and said nothing can be done. The wheel with the puncture is now at the rear.

Any other ideas please?

You wouldn't think that driving on a flat tyre would affect steering, unless it had been potholed or something, and that would in all likelihood damage the rim.

Is the new tyre a significantly different tread pattern, or the same tyre type? I have had some odd effects from mixed tyres on the same axle, especially directional patterns with symmetric or asymmetric.

Check that it is actually pulling to the left, and not just the camber of the road, by driving it down the crown of the road. Occasionally, some people only notice something odd when something else goes wrong, and connect the two.

If it is still pulling to the left, there are not many other options left, apart from trying someone else to check the tracking - it's amazing how many garages are poor at steering alignment.

If the car has a spare wheel try replacing the the repaired wheel with the spare to see if it makes a difference.  If the puncture was caused by striking a pothole the wheel might have sustained some damage.

When I had my alloys restored one of the things they did was check the WHEEL for balance and alignment. One of mine had been kerbed and has a twist which they straightened out (don't ask me how) before doing the restoration work.
If all else fails, it may be worth getting the wheel checked out by one of these specialist wheel restoring outfits. Only cost me £55 per wheel.

Is it actually pulling to the left, if you loosen grip on the steering wheel does the car turn left or is the steering wheel misaligned? I ask this because when I last had two new tyres fitted on the front, yes I know the advice is to put the new ones on the back, the wheel was misaligned slightly to the left. I took the car back to the tyre shop and they said that this was not unusual and realigned the steering and corrected the problem.

Thank you so much!

There is no spare tyre in her car, unfortunately.

Her back tyres, same brand are now at the front. New one at the rear with the wheel.

Alignment may be an issue. Asked her to get an independent opinion. Will update you all. Stay safe!

Have you checked the tyre pressure? If the tyre is rotational, has it been fitted the right way round?
