Sayings
« on: March 01, 2021, 02:22:50 PM »
It's the first of the month so it's 'White Rabbits' time again. On the first of every month you should say 'White Rabbits, White Rabbits, White Rabbits' while turning round three times. This for continuing good fortune.

If you see a magpie assume it is male and greet him as follows, 'Hello Mr Magpie, how are your wife and children?' Again to avoid bad luck.

Anyone know any more?

Vic.

Never heard of the magpie one. If I heard you speaking to a Mr Magpie, I would think you had gone quite mad.

Intrigued, so I had to google...

I should have known that one, I used to watch Magpie, and that ditty was the theme tune!

I've never heard the rabbit one before. Sounds nuts, but if it works for you!!

I don't want to remember the magpie thing, enough to worry about as it is!  ;D

In the Isle of Man there is a bridge called Fairy Bridge. The Manx insist on saying "Hello to the little people" each time they cross it. True.  ;)

White Rabbits is one I am familiar with - but only if there is an R in the month.

I'm not a superstitious person at all, but I do say "touch wood" and feel compelled to do it...

Is "shite for luck" universal over the UK? It's never struck me as being very lucky being crapped on by a bird, and I can't say that I have ever noticed any appreciable increase in luck after these rather unpleasant events.

:D I'm glad we don't do no2 on that list "2. Throwing Plates at Your Neighbour’s House– Denmark" - sounds more Greek to me.

I don't see myself as superstitious, but not up for walking under ladders. The less things I know about the better, like the magpie thing, the less to worry about!

I don't know, I found that one quite appealing! I think I must have misread it as "throwing plates at your neighbours".
