Front passenger door rattling
« on: February 12, 2018, 01:07:28 PM »
Hi

I hope someone maybe able to offer a little advice

Recently, the front passenger door has developed a rattle at around 20 - 30 mph

It sounds to be getting louder I think or perhaps just noticing it more

There is nothing in the door pockets, pushing the door trim does not quiet it, winding window down does not stop it nor opening the 2 front dashboard doors. Central locking makes no difference

There appears to be nothing lose and no obvious things that it could be

It sounds as though it is towards the middle door pillar but again, it maybe me mishearing

Please does anyone have any ideas

Many thanks

John

Is the passenger side seatbelt engaged in the clip?

Usually rattles between seat and upright post.

Could noise be coming from glove box ? Noises travel on a car and it is sometimes hard to track them down. Is the rattle still there when someone sitting in passenger seat (may be something loose under seat or in seat back). Does noise get worse on bumpy road or is it speed related ?

Is the grab handle above door in its sprung back position and not loose and rattling on its plastic mount ?

I had a weird noise from passenger side once and it turned out to be a tree branch that had wedged in bodywork and hitting the road.

Hi culzean

Many thanks

I opened the 2 glove boxes but rattle remained sorry

There is nothing under the seat or in seat back pouch/pocket

Nothing in door pocket and only rattle at about 20 - 30 mph. If I increase speed to 40 or plus, rattle stops

It does sound as though it is coming from where the elbow rest on door panel is. Door panel feels tight all around door and handle section feels secure

I thought window, but opening window does not stop rattle

It does seem when passenger sat in car, rattle no longer there but I知 stumped and it痴 too cold to take door panel off just yet

Once again, many thanks for you help

John

I once had something very similar on a Vauxhall Astra and it turned out that the bolts securing the passenger seat runners to the floor were slightly loose. Tightening the bolts cured the problem.

Hi davegreen55

Many thanks

I知 sorry, a silly question from a non mechanic - are they easy to get too (fearful of the seatbelt tensioner mechanisms)

I may try to move the passenger seat forward and see if that cures it

I appreciate all the help and suggestions posted

It値l be later today though but I値l update my post afterwards

Many thanks

Put a heavy shopping bag on the passenger seat and don't fasten the seatbelt - that may help figure out if the rattle is seat or seatbelt (or even door interior) related.

You don't want to mess with taking door panel off unless you are 100% sure noise is from inside door because they never seem to go back on easily, and there is normally a plastic sheet (like a water seal) stuck onto door under the trim panel that never seems to fit properly again once disturbed.

Hi

Sorry for late reply, had to wait until today

The seat itself made a clang when I lift the move bar at bottom of seat and released it. I think it may not have been fully located in the grove as it were, if that痴 the right terminology

Rattle now gone I知 pleased to say

Thanks for all the help and saving me time/messing about with door.

Many thanks

John
