How effective is flushing to resolve "CVT judder"
« on: August 18, 2016, 10:40:21 PM »
Got a 2007 Jazz CVT with 32k from a Honda dealer in May which started with the dreaded Judder nothing in the service history to say it has ever been changed. Anyway took her in today and so far the judder has gone.

Just wondering how effective this has been for others long term. Did it resolve it?

The mechanic said it cures 9 out of 10 cases. I'm out of the extended Honda CVT warranty period but under 100k but covered by the 12 month warranty that came with the car should the start clutch need replacing. hopefully not as its just more hassle.

If it was just overdue a fluid change, then that should cure it, but it does need a regular change, maybe every 2 years although that is subject to some debate and probably subject to driving conditions.  For a quick cheap 'just about to trade it in' fix Xado EX120 auto (£20) seems to work wonders, but nobody knows how long for.

Would be interestngto know just what was done. The term flushing often used to cover a simple drain of what drainable and refill.
My wife has 2002 car, purchased  2011 at 54,000 km with new pack. Used for short trips. Very slight judder just evident recently at 85,000. Agents seemed doubtful that a simple refill would acheive much.Seems they and gearbox specialists refill, subject to a slip routine, then fill again. This seemed a bit brutal so I just drained and refilled 3 ¼ litres CVT fluid.. This seems to be what ordinary garages do and seems to have cured. I gather gearbox specialists  also use an additive. They and agents profess their treatment corrects quite serious judder.

I was there when it was done, drained re-filled run through all the gears on the ramp, drained and re-filled so flushed and then road test judder gone so far done near 150 miles and still good.

But will it last? I'm intrested in wanting to know of others experiences, is it a tempoary fix?

My experience was that the oil change last a little while, think about a month or two then came back, went in and had the clutch changed and Honda paid for it all. There was no warranty on the car.

Had my 56 CVT Sport  flushed at 37,000 miles 16 months ago & starting to judder slightly 8,500 miles later. Due a service so will be asking garage to check out as service sheets state to change CVT fluid every 4 years or 37,000 miles!

Just bought an auto 2004 Jazz sport 1.4 CVT (114000 miles) for my wife to take driving test ...noticed the judder when taking off
Service history shows 2 transmission oil changes but not what type!
Seems a bit expensive to flush with CVT-F which is recommended by Honda (not CVT Z1) so wondered if I could use a generic flushing liquid to add to existing, drain and refill with CVT-F ?

I posted this to another thread, but I managed to do it by myself last weekend.

It cured the problem completely. Now the car runs very smooth even with full throttle. I know it will come back at some point, but I am not scared anymore as I can fix it. It takes time to drain out, but the procedure is very simple.
(I know I shouldn't do this way but) I even didn't have to use axle stands, just used a pump jack as I really didn't have to go under the car, just my arm. Two 4L bottle of Honda Genuine CVT fluids are not cheap, but well-worth, I belive.

Also, in Japan, many people started using this additive for extra protection. I saw so many reviews (20-30 people at least) - actually cured the problem by just adding 200-300ml of this SOD-1 to CVT fluid tank even without flushing the old oil.

Has anyone tried this in UK?

I had my gearbox flushed two services ago and it is starting to judder again. I also had hiccups when accelerating after a 200 mile non-stop run and that was cured (very expensively!) by a new bank of plug coils (the rear bank of four are over the exhaust manifold and get overheated). My passenger wing mirror motor won't stop and having dismantled the exterior parts I can't access the limit switches as the black matchbox unit won't come apart where I assume they are housed. Also there is no fuse no.22 in my box as recommended by other comments.

I've used the ex120 and I've done 2000 miles since and no juddering. I'll probably change the gearbox fluid every three years also as I do at least 13k a year.

Hi guys I had a really bad judder on mine tried EX120 it worked for about 6 weeks the judder never went 100%
So I changed the Oil I didnt want to do the Honda clutch burn ( to much of a risk) I drove it 100 miles and changed it again now 100% gone and driving really nice , Now my wifes Jazz had a tiny judder so did the same and worked untill she used the 7 speed mode and now has a tiny judder , i wondered if there was some bad oil in the valve body with got out when she went into 7 speed , so am changing the oil again tomorrow  for us in the UK i found ebay is the cheapest place for the Honda CVT-F I paid about £30 - £38 inc postage and yes its the real stuff
