Oil for Jazz Dynamic 1.5 L15B3
« on: December 19, 2023, 02:36:59 PM »
Hi

While looking for Castrol oil recommended for my Jazz 2018 at
https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingdom/home/car-engine-oil-and-fluids/motor-oil-and-fluids-finder.html

There are two 1.5 petrol, 2018, Jazz models listed
1.5 i-vtec (PF) ACEA C3
and
1.5  i-vtec ACEA A5/B5

My jazz has catalytic converter that is for sure.

Does it make it PF?

Thanks

Manual recommended Honda oil ;)
If not available use ACEA A5 /B5

Question is why Castrol recommends ACEA C3 for my 1.5 i-vtec if it has PF?

As of my understanding C3 is there to prolong catalytic converter life but A5 is supposedly good for  molybdenum ciated bearing or something like that.

Would love to understand more about it.

Thanks

The recommended oil for a UK GK5 1.5 Sport is 0w20 fully synthetic

SAE 0W20 is the viscosity grade, then you must consider also oil specifications (API, ACEA, ...). ACEA Ax oils are formulated for gasoline engines, ACEA Bx oils for diesel engines while ACEA Cx oils are specific for engines with particulate filter, since their ash does not permanently clogg the filter. So engines with particulate filter, gasoline or diesel doesn'matter, MUST USE ACEA Cx lubricants.

The engine of alla 1.5 GK Honda Jazz have the particulate filter, so you must use ACEA C3 oil.
Other countries such as USA and Australia have 1.5 without particulate filter, so they can use ACEA A5/B5 oils.
The 1.3 engine does not have particulate filter.

That is exactly what I concluded ... I just wasn't sure if catalytic converter is actually same thing as particulate filter.

I was checking european user manual (Jazz Dynamic 1.5 i-vtec) and for
2018 it says ACEA A5/B5
For 2019 it says C3
I think that is because from 2018 PF was mandatory on all petrol cars in EU

That is not in question, there are full synthetic 0w20 oils with different set of tests for standard as :
Castrol Edge 0W-20 V A5/B5
Castrol Edge 0W-20 C5
Castrol Edge 0W-20 LL IV FE
Castrol EDGE Professional H 0W-20(for Honda) API SN
and more only from Castrol...

Can anyone enlighten me if particulate filter and catalytic converter are the same thing on petrol engine?

I stand corrected, I have just had a peek at my oil filler cap and C2 is stamped on it which means it has a PF, my car is a late 2018 manufactured car registered 27/02/2019.
Here is the relevant page from my OM

Great staff, that explains everything.

Sometime during 2018 Jazz got PF probably in means of different filter package inside catalytic converter on exhaust line.
Attached is mine oil cap image and as per your kindly provided OM page mine car is without PF and therefore needs A5/B5 ACEA approved OIL.

For viscosity I will stay with 0W-20 over this  winter and swap to either 0W-30 or even 5W-30 for summer, as air temperature where I live can go up to 40celsius.

Thanks for input, btw, what engine type you have? Mine is L15B3.

GK3s do not have particulate filter, they all have port injection so they don't need it.
EU GK5s have direct fuel injection so they HAVE particulate filter,  they need it due to EURO6 emission regulations.

That’s why I corrected myself. The OP was referring to the GK5, mine has a PF and the OP’s doesn’t.
