Would you mix oil brands?
« on: August 31, 2023, 12:41:04 PM »
I usualy buy 5 litres of whatever oil is best value or on promotion at the time, when oil change is due. My MK2 Jazz only takes 3.4L of oil, so I always end up with 1.6L left over.

I've 1.6L of Petronas oil that is <1yrs old, and some Castrol. Both A5/B5 5w30 spec.

Question I'm asking, is it OK to mix brands of oil? I've researched online, but can't find anything conclusive.

This forum is blessed with lots of wisedom and knowledge........opinions please!  :D

Can't think of a reason not to be OK,

Both good quality

I can remember when you checked the oil when filling up, and put a pint of whatever the garage sold

I do , have done for years. No issues in 20+ years.

If I drove an £80k Porsche and track raced it I would not.

Agree, I wouldn't worry too much. I'm not aware of any base stock nor additive incompatibility issues likely to cause any problems. The oil companies will very probably not  recommend it for commercial reasons but I've never heard of any problems resulting from mixing decent quality oils of appropriate specs for the car.

Cheers folks.  8)

It's not a money issue, it's the waste of perfectly good oil that bothers me.

If in doubt about the oil pour into container with paper coffee filter. I recall some globs being caught before topping up my SAAB 99 Ems years ago.
