Jazz juddering - automatic
« on: January 12, 2021, 02:04:41 PM »
Hi all,

Need some advice, my jazz randomly started juddering and by juddering I mean it’s like when driving a manual and you ease the clutch up too quickly.

I have took it in for a transmission fluid change, which the garage stated was black..

I have also tried Dr Tranny Shudder Fix (even tho it’s not for CVT it was the only I could get my hands on within an hour) this also hasn’t fixed the problem

When I drive the car in S it doesn’t generally do it... but in D does it quite often

So upon reading is there anything else you guys recommend.. I have seen Xado Ex 120 being chucked about and 2/3 times flushing of the fluid?

Any help appreciated

Welcome. A couple of flushes might help. Only use the correct Honda fluid. Hope the Dr Tranny Shudder Fix hasn't done too much harm.

Are you aware of any harm it is likely to cause?

They tell you only to use the correct Honda CVT fluid (there are two) and not to use any other CVT fluid. That's why I commented on Dr Tranny Shudder Fix. I have no idea what it does or doesn't do.

I had the same problem when I purchased our 55 plate CVT back in September, the Honda specialist I took it to told me the Honda recommended procedure was 2 flushes and then a final fill using ONLY Honda CVT-F fluid as Jocko has said. I also asked them to add a syringe of Xado EX-120 as a ‘belt and braces’ approach, it has been faultless since then.

I would suggest if the fluid was reported ‘black’ it was either very old or the incorrect type and a change on it’s own would not be enough to sort it, the only way is to follow the Honda recommended method and see how you go.

It’s not just high mileage that requires the fluid to be changed, as low mileage possibly causes more problems with condensation forming in the gearbox which I believe is one cause of the stuttering. Our car will be lucky if it does 3k per year and I will have it flushed and refilled every 2 years,  to hopefully prevent any further problems.

EDIT
Just did a bit of Googling on Dr. Tranny and it specifically states it is for use with ATF and Torque Converter transmissions, if it were me I would be flushing that out with several flushes of the correct fluid ASAP.

I had to look that one up.  ;)

Appears to be a friction modifier. I wouldn't think it would do any permanent damage, but you don't really want anything that gives extra slippy in a belt driven transmission that relies on friction for drive. I would flush it out with the correct Honda CVT fluid.

A more dire issue may be how the friction modifier will contaminate the clutchpack, I've always seen it said that a gearbox with a wetclutch must never use friction modifiers.
The OP should probably do a double fluid flush asap.
