Keyless Theft Prevention
« on: June 04, 2021, 05:50:11 PM »
I've just been told via the Police OWL message board that this product has just been Police approved :

https://www.hard-off-security.com/

Looks interesting for protecting older keyless fobs.
Let's be careful out there !

I suppose that's different to "hard-on security".  :P

Very expensive for something that contains less than £5 in parts: flexible PCB plus a microcontroller with integrated motion sensor.

I thought it was expensive as well.

I suppose for some it's that or risk a theft.

The OWL message board it was on is offering 25% discount but only to Hillingdon residents via a coupon code. Still expensive though.
Let's be careful out there !

My key goes in an old toffee tin at the back of the house. Price? Free.

Have you stood next to the car to see if the tin does the job?
I think you’ll find it makes no difference.
I got this...expensive but beautifully engineered and works a treat.

That's a fancy expensive aluminium box.

A Faraday cage is still a Faraday cage, and the wavelength of 433MHz is 70cm, much larger than any lid gap.

The wavelength of a typical microwave oven's output is 12cm, a couple of orders of magnitude larger than the gaps in the mesh on the door that you see through.

I will test this later with a biscuit tin.

I already tried the tin trick and found it ineffective so got the expensive aluminium box 😜
My spare key is in a tin box but well wrapped in aluminium foil and I checked it stopped transmission.
The faraday wallets seem to break down from what I’ve read.

For most people, your car keyfob is just one item on your keyring with the bunch of house keys.
I would suggest the aluminium box advertised, is far too small for the purpose.

I agree,  a continuous metal surface like a biscuit tin is better than something with holes ( like conductive fabric ) but even then as long as the holes are small compared to wavelength it is OK.   The further away from the front of the house the better, the power levels with keyless are very small as well, so military grade stuff not needed.

Sweetie tin works a treat, thanks for asking. This whole thing reminds me of how Curry’s try to upsell fancy HDMI cables and whatnot. It’s all nonsense.

Myth busted!

One Quality Street sweetie tin, Christmas 2020 edition, with keyless fob inside and the lid on. I went right up to the car on the passenger side with the fob in the tin and could not get the car to open "keyless" in any orientation.

Don't need to protect our keys. We do however keep them at the back of the house and out of site. Not that our old Jazz is worth so much.

We have ALL of our debit and credit cards in RFID sleeves. No horrible criminal is reading my card info.

My wallet has 2 note sections. I use the inner one for notes, when I have any, and the outer has multi-layer bacofoil.

Apparently that will block any probe.
Let's be careful out there !
