L13B2 engine Valve Clearance.
« on: October 19, 2022, 11:02:54 PM »
Just a question.
Does anybody know the exact valve clearance value for the 1.3 2015on Jazz?
No way to get it, even from the online Haynes Manual (what a disappointment, bought it, very poor).

Another question.
The service plan says "Inspect valve clearance every 120000km - 75000miles, sensory method".
What does it mean "sensory method"?

To me, that means check you can feel a small amount of slack. No slack is the concern with valve clearances.

Sensory method means listening to the noise.  Traditionally this  was done by an experienced mechanic simply listening to the noise and using their own judgment as to whether its too noisy overall, or might    have a particular worrying  sound such as tapping or knocking.

Its possible they now use a  sophisticated sound meter to measure the sound on a scale with a pass/fail  result   but I suspect its still  more likely to be human judgment .

I'm not a professional but I would have thought  a high precision   Honda engine  probably alters valve clearances by using a variety of shims with a precise thickness  rather than relatively crude  threaded adjusters. (I may be wrong)  If so  its  unlikely to need its  clearances altered during the normal service life of the engine.  They might get noisier on a very high mileage engine but by the time this becomes excessive  enough to need fairly complex adjustment the engine may also  benefit from a more major rebuild in other areas.    If the cylinder head, valves, valve seats, cam shafts etc  are replaced or recut then valve adjustment may be required,  but as part of this major rebuild/refurbishment.

Found this for the 2022 CR-V.

3:Sensory Method
Adjust the valves during service 120,000 km (75,000 miles) if they are noisy.

Item 4 is the screw adjuster for the valve adjustment and 10 is the lock nut.

The Hillman Imp was adjusted by shims and it was a total nightmare (at the time I specialised in repairing Imp engines}. You needed drawers full of shims in all the different sizes.

Yes, same pattern of the Honda Deauville engine and Renault Clio 1.2 16v, valve adjustment is very easy, the long and hard job is removing  and replacing all parts hiding the rocker arm cover.

it means the mechanic listens to the engine and if it sounds ok or not

My wife does the same, but my wife would go on driving in both cases.
