Help with information on Car Breakdown Insurance
« on: October 19, 2017, 10:29:24 AM »
As you are all the font of knowledge and given my problems, I have gone onto a comparison site and it appears to be a toss up between Green Flag and GEM.

I would be grateful for any input from members please.

Cost to a degree is not the decider all we want is complete cover.

The biggest Joke of all is the RAC which offers cover on line. Unfortunately  Response ( for olduns like us) is not listed.
Thanks

Well, my choice for complete cover would be GEM or Autoaid.

Both get good write ups, and you can contact either by text message to report a breakdown.

I always go for Green Flag as I drive in France and Spain as well and they cover Europe. They do give a NC Discount as well however I do ring them every year because the price has gone up and they drop it again. In France driving on Motorways you MUST have breakdown cover. However you have to use the Motorway breakdown people who tow you to a safe place (and charge you) until your own breakdown people can come out to you.
Saying this I have never broken down at home or abroad ( I have a Jazz after all) so can't comment on their response times etc though the reports are all good.

As mentioned before, I have been GEM member for 6 yrs. Used it three times, 2x on the Jazz due to dead battery and 1x on my Ibiza due to broken spring which required towing. I have to say from my experience no problems. I do the reclaimed service so it's cheaper. Every year I called them up to renew and ask for a discount rate. Plus I introduce my mates to this company and I get £20 M and S vouchers to help with the food etc...

My mate had a problem once as they took ages to come. So he complained and got some money back. So at least their customer service is good.

They used to include Accident Assistance but not any more which is a shame.

One thing that confuses me with AA card is that it does not have the expiry year on it,  just the year you joined  and the renewal as 12 JAN,  if you put the old and new cards side by side they are identical - I have taken to writing the year I received it on mine,  because once  you sign the new card you can't tell them apart.  I found an old card in a drawer and put it next to my new one - identical.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

I spoke to a AA patrolman a few weeks ago about this, and showed him my cards from this years and 2016.   He said it didn't make any difference which card was used, and advised me to keep one card in each of my two vehicles.

RAC is similar. They don't even send out a replacement car these days. If you have a call out, the patrolman gets all his info over his computer and I have never even been asked to show a card.

I think I'm going to swap to Autoaid, my old Dad has been with them for years.

One thing that's always put me off is the wording in the Policy Document that states they only cover "UK Mainland". As I do visit the islands in Scotland, I sent them a Facebook message querying this yesterday.

I got an instant response. They said that they can't remember it coming up before, and could I hang on a short while while they contact the underwriter to check. I wasn't very hopeful about the outcome, but sure enough, they came back ten minutes later and confirmed that cover extends to all UK islands.

£43-odd for personal cover for you and your legal spouse, and you can get a fiver back on Topcashback. Can't be bad.

Years ago I would have recommended Britannia Rescue -  I worked with the founder - nowadays I use Autoaid no problems to date

To be honest, the main thing I want from breakdown cover is the choice of recovery destination.

Many of the cheaper deals, such as FirstCall mentioned above, will only recover to nearest garage, home or destination - whichever is the nearest. That's no good to me, I need to get my vehicle home where I can fix it.
