Spammers
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:21:54 PM »
Security improvements made to the site over the last month has significantly reduced attempted registrations by spammers and prevented them from posting offensive adverts in the forums. The numbers have dropped from around 50 attempted registrations per day to only two or three per week.

That said, please keep an eye out and report any dodgy adverts by clicking on the report to moderator icon in each post. We will work as quickly as possible to remove the content and will delete the spammers account immediately.

Thanks.

Hi Richard

Is there anything that can be done, to stop the forum being overrun with these adverts for various drugs etc?
It would seem that we have suddenly been infiltrated by these spammers.

Best regards - Ken T.

Firstly I'm sorry this has happened.

As for prevention we have the following procedures:

- The IP and email address of each new member are checked against stopforumspam.com*.
- Registrations are not accepted using disposable email addresses (email addresses that expire after a shot while).
- No registrations allowed using *.mail.ru email addresses (a known hotbed of spam)

*the problem of course is that one has to be identified as a spammer and added to this database before they can be blocked. Someone has to take the first hit!

I also delete new registrations who clearly post garbage in the 'What Jazz do you own' registration field.

The Stop Forum Spam check has flagged 148 new members as spam in the last 24 hours! But all it takes is one to slip through and we had three... :(

New registrations are currently on Admin-approval.

Thanks for sorting the annoying adverts out and keeping Clubjazz going. The people who post these adverts and send out spam and viruses spoil the internet for other users it is a pity they can not be disconnected.

Today's outbreak used IPs and email domains from Ukraine.

My solution to filter out ********** pushers and undesirables on the forum I run was to put some very South African questions that needed to be answered before the new member could register.  Almost impossible for a non-South African to answer.

example:  What was Gauteng pre-1994?

That sorted it out immediately and instead of 20 dodgy people a day, we now get 0

It might be difficult to do on a English car forum.  Have to put your mind to it...
