The Volvo system often got confused and thought 60mph road signs in the newer font were 50mph! The Jazz on the same roads doesn't have this issue.

What newer font? The font on UK speed limit signs hasn't changed since the mid 1960s. And there were no 60mph signs back then!

However, Ireland did change font when they moved from mph to km/h.

My first Crosstar was fine though.

Wait! What? You're on your second Crosstar already?

I would vouch for differences in roadsign fonts ,with newer signs being heavier (bold). Same font, but appears different.
Wonder if now they are digitally printed, whilst the older ones would have been laid up by hand.

Ireland uses 100 km/hr signs instead of the national speed limit sash. Which to me in a world of speed sign recognition on cars makes sense. I know that means that the 10 mph drop for vans and trailers gets killed, but not many vans heed slower limits anyway.
And I guess I am one of the few on the board to hanker for complete 'metricification' in uk.

Post Brexit, England, (only) is going back to Pints and Gallons, 240 pennies in the pound, Furlongs and Chains.

Feet and Inches ? :)

What makes me chuckle, and there are other examples, is that wheel sizes are in inches but tyre sizes are often metric.

Will we go back to buying fuel in gallons?

Probably not, as the high price would likely scare people!

Seeing that it costs £7 to go however many miles you get in mpg would make it easier to work out costs though.

The only non-standard signs I've seen have been mistakes or are on private property. Some internally illuminated Scottish Highland speed limit signs use totally the wrong font.

There are two weights of the Transport font. A thinner one for light lettering on a dark background and a thicker one for dark lettering on a light background.

Older signs will have used cut vinyl shapes which may have eroded at the edges.

Essentially, if the speed limit sign was produced after 1964 and the numbers don't look like the ones in the image below, the sign isn't lawful.

IIRC

Wheel sizes in inches because that's what the Americans used when they invented the wheel  ;) (with solid rubber tyres).

Tyre sizes in metric because that's what the French (Michelin) used when they invented the pneumatic tyre .

I don't really think this thread is the correct place for a discussion about Brexit, (yes, I know, I might have initiated it. Sorry). How about I open a Brexit header in Off Topic?
