Ex upholstery. Is it leather?
« on: December 31, 2020, 10:23:06 AM »
That's the question. Is it Leather. The jazz brochure says leather. Most reviews say near, fake leather.

Very few cars have real leather these days, it’s all “vegan” (plastic!!) but the brochure says leather. I doubt Honda would put any significant inaccuracies in their brochure.

I don't think Honda would claim leather if it wasn't.
More importantly why should a few vegans have any say over what the rest of the country does. 600,000 vegans versus 60+ million non vegans is such a tiny percentage!!

It gives manufacturers an excuse to cover their seats in cheap plastic and claim it’s for eco reasons! ;)

Plastic is a by-product of the oil and gas industry, and leather is a by-product of cattle rearing for meat and milk.  There’s no easy “ethical” solution!  Personally, I would not wish to be without leather shoes, but I don’t see it as an advantage in cars.

Exactly - plastic is a terrible material if you’re trying to be “eco” - it makes no sense!  ;D

I’ve always preferred fabric, but my last two cars had “vegan” leather... :(

Hello, this is my first post - I've been in the forum for a few days as I get ready for my first Jazz hopefully next week (MY22 Jazz EX) - moving from a much bigger, old estate car which sadly will fall foul of the London ULEZ next month.

Replying to this old post as I was also wondering on the leather.

Disappointingly - if the online Honda web support person (not the dealer) I spoke to today is correct:
"It is synthetic leather"

If so, that is a shame - surely they need to state this in the sales materials.

You have to smile at the euphemism in the motor trade “synthetic leather” is not leather - it’s an artificial man made product.
It’s like calling chemically processed oat water “oat milk” just to pretend it’s natural rather than the man made artificial product it is.

Some years ago when I had one of the original Nissan X-Trail's that had leather seats, I took a new Mercedes C class out for a road test. Speaking to the Merc dealer I was comparing the Nissan with the Mercedes. I said it's a surprise that the Merc has plastic upholstery as my Nissan has the real stuff. "No no, it's not plastic", he says, "it's synthetic leather!" Really?!

It always amuses me when buying things such as mobile phone covers on Ebay when described as "Genuine PU leather".
Who are they kidding? only the ignorati! Genuine polyurethane leather . HAHA!
Back to the thread....
On The new HR-V the seat covering is described as 'imitation leather with cloth' or you can opt, for £1200, for 'real' leather  with Alston' (which is a mock suede).
So I assume if they say leather they mean leather.

My father bought a new Ford Consul in 1958. The seats were green plastic, (PVC?). The plastic gave off a horrible smell that me and my sister hated.
