The technology to produce large scale battery storage - NOT using Lithium - is developing..  That will cover short term still non windy cloudy periods when wind/solar are minimal..

Redox flow batteries

Nonetheless, there's a lot of scaling up needed to shift the storage capacity from MW-hours to GW-days. The UK can have a week or more of wind-free weather which, if mid-winter, could coincide with fog or low cloud and very poor solar generation. Small modular nuclear reactors in urban areas could also be a source of heat if people can tolerate the prospect of living near one, but given the choice between that and having no heating, might opt for the warmth.

The Orkneys provide so much tidal energy they cannot use it all. Due to the lack of suitable cabling, they cannot send it to the mainland. The turn it into Hydrogen and store it. They use it to power the ferries when they are tied up alongside in Orkney.

I see that new appliances and boilers are needed for hydrogen which will add to the cost. I would hope that manufacturers will soon be offering "Hydrogen ready" products which will only need an easy adjustment if the fuel type changes.

I may have misunderstood my plumber but I thought that he was talking about a conversion similar to the one for conversion from coal gas to natural gas.

According to the links you posted they will supply, free, new hydrogen appliances.

Yes I was meaning for general conversion. It would make sense to supply new appliances for the trial.

You have to start with a Hydrogen ready boiler.
Worcester Bosch and Baxi Heating have revealed plans for hydrogen gas boilers. Worcester Bosch’s Martyn Bridges explains where he thinks hydrogen can replace natural gas. Converting hydrogen-ready boilers from natural gas to hydrogen is designed to be simple. ‘When hydrogen is turned on, only two or three small component changes will be necessary to make it suitable for 100% hydrogen,’ says Bridges. ‘We anticipate it will take engineers around an hour to make the conversion.’

Yep, So I see.
It would still be a lot easier for me to have my boiler changed to a hydrogen one than to change to a heat exchanger.
